NSFAS Allowances 2027

Student Funding

Living, accommodation, transport and study support

NSFAS bursary funding can cover more than tuition. Depending on the student’s institution, study mode, accommodation and other circumstances, approved students can qualify for additional allowances during the academic year.

Living Meals and daily expenses
Accommodation Approved student housing
Transport For qualifying students living away from campus
Learning Materials Books and study resources
Personal Care Applies to qualifying student categories
2027 AMOUNTS NOT YET PUBLISHED
Do not use old allowance amounts as 2027 figures.

NSFAS publishes allowance amounts and limits for each academic year. As of 17 August 2026, the official 2027 allowance amounts and payment schedule have not yet been released. This guide explains the current allowance structure and will need the new rand amounts added once NSFAS confirms them.

Quick Answer

NSFAS bursary recipients can receive tuition funding plus allowances depending on their circumstances. University students can currently qualify for learning materials, a living allowance and either accommodation or transport. TVET college students can currently qualify for living or personal care support and either accommodation or transport according to the applicable rules. Exact NSFAS allowance amounts for 2027 have not yet been announced.

An NSFAS funding approval does not mean every student receives every allowance.

The amount and type of support depend on factors such as:

  • The institution where you are registered.
  • Whether you study at a university or TVET college.
  • Whether you live at home or away from home.
  • Whether your accommodation is catered or self-catering.
  • Whether your accommodation meets NSFAS requirements.
  • Whether you qualify for transport instead of accommodation.
  • Whether you study through contact or distance learning.
  • Your registered course or credit load.
  • Whether you are a student living with a disability.

If you are still at the application stage, start with NSFAS Applications 2027 .

How Much Will NSFAS Allowances Be in 2027?

The official NSFAS 2027 allowance amounts have not yet been published.

NSFAS funding rules state that allowance costs and limits are published for each academic year. This means an amount used in 2025 or 2026 should not automatically be presented as the 2027 rate.

Be careful with “NSFAS 2027 allowance tables” appearing before NSFAS publishes the new rates.

Old allowance figures are often copied into new articles and social media posts. Wait for NSFAS or the Department of Higher Education and Training to confirm the actual 2027 amounts.

Once the 2027 figures are published, the main amounts to check will include:

  • University living allowance.
  • University learning material allowance.
  • University transport allowance.
  • University accommodation limits.
  • TVET living allowance where applicable.
  • TVET personal care allowance.
  • TVET transport allowance.
  • TVET accommodation limits.
  • Distance-learning allowances.
  • Additional disability support limits.

What Does NSFAS Funding Cover?

For an approved bursary recipient, NSFAS funding can cover the cost of study and additional student support.

Tuition and Registration

Qualifying students studying an NSFAS-funded programme have tuition funded according to the applicable institutional and NSFAS rules. Registration forms part of the tuition funding arrangement.

Living Allowance

Helps qualifying students with meals and ordinary day-to-day living expenses during the academic period.

Accommodation

Supports qualifying students living in approved university, college or private student accommodation.

Transport

Supports qualifying students who travel to their institution instead of receiving funded accommodation.

Learning Materials

Supports qualifying study costs such as academic books, materials and approved learning resources.

Additional Disability Support

Qualifying students with disabilities may receive additional approved support such as assistive devices or human support.

Accommodation and transport are alternatives.

Under the current NSFAS bursary rules, a student generally qualifies for either an accommodation allowance or a transport allowance, not both for the same period.

NSFAS University Allowances

Under the latest NSFAS bursary rules, university allowances can include:

  • Learning materials.
  • Living allowance.
  • Accommodation or transport.
  • Personal care in specific qualifying circumstances.
  • Additional disability-related support where approved.
Student in Accommodation
  • May qualify for approved accommodation funding.
  • May qualify for living support depending on the accommodation type.
  • Does not normally also receive transport funding for the same period.
  • Catered accommodation is treated differently from self-catering accommodation.
Student Living at Home
  • Does not receive an accommodation allowance for living at home.
  • May qualify for transport according to the applicable rules.
  • Can qualify for the other allowance categories applicable to the student’s registration.

NSFAS TVET College Allowances

The TVET funding structure is not identical to the university structure.

Under the current NSFAS bursary rules, funded TVET students can qualify for:

  • Living support where applicable.
  • Personal care allowance.
  • Accommodation or transport.
  • Additional disability support where approved.
TVET students currently receive applicable allowances through their own bank accounts.

Students should make sure their personal banking information is correctly submitted and verified when NSFAS requests it. Payments are not meant to be redirected to another student’s account.

Occupational programme students

A TVET student registered for an occupational qualification may qualify for NSFAS allowances where the student is in simulated training and meets the applicable conditions.

Under the current rules, a student in an occupational programme who has an employment contract and receives a stipend does not qualify for NSFAS allowances under that allowance provision.

What Is the NSFAS Living Allowance?

The living allowance is intended to support basic day-to-day expenses, particularly meals, while the student studies.

“Meal allowance” and “living allowance” are often used as if they are two separate payments.

Under the current NSFAS framework, the living allowance is intended to cover food and incidental day-to-day expenses. Whether food is paid separately depends on the student’s accommodation arrangement.

Self-catering students

A qualifying student in self-catering accommodation can receive a living allowance for food and ordinary daily expenses, subject to the applicable annual rules.

Catered residence students

Where accommodation already includes meals, the funding structure can incorporate food and personal support into the catered accommodation cost rather than paying the same living amount separately.

Do not compare your payment directly with a student in a different accommodation type.

Two NSFAS-funded students at the same university can receive different cash allowances because one is in a catered residence and another is in self-catering accommodation.

NSFAS Accommodation Allowance

NSFAS can fund qualifying students who need approved accommodation while studying away from home.

Accommodation may include:

  • University-owned residence.
  • TVET college accommodation.
  • Institution-leased student accommodation.
  • Approved private student accommodation.
  • NSFAS-accredited accommodation where the NSFAS accommodation system applies.
Do not move into unapproved accommodation and assume NSFAS will pay the landlord.

NSFAS states that funded students should use accredited accommodation. A student staying in unaccredited accommodation without the required NSFAS and institution permission may not receive accommodation funding for that property.

Can a landlord charge an NSFAS student an application fee?

NSFAS currently warns that beneficiaries should not be charged fees by student accommodation providers simply for access to NSFAS-funded accommodation arrangements.

Students should report suspicious charges or demands through the appropriate NSFAS or institutional channels.

Does NSFAS pay accommodation money directly to the student?

Not necessarily.

Accommodation payments can be handled directly between NSFAS, an institution and an approved accommodation provider depending on the accommodation arrangement.

Do not assume the full accommodation amount will appear as cash in your personal bank account.

NSFAS Transport Allowance

Transport support is intended for qualifying students who travel between home and their institution rather than receiving an accommodation allowance.

You normally cannot receive both transport and accommodation.

The current university and TVET bursary rules provide for accommodation or transport based on the student’s circumstances.

Your institution may require information confirming where you live before processing a transport allowance.

Always follow the institution’s transport application process where one is required.

NSFAS Learning Material and Book Allowance

University students funded by NSFAS currently qualify for a learning material allowance according to the applicable annual limit.

It is intended for items connected to study, including:

  • Academic books.
  • Prescribed learning materials.
  • Study resources.
  • An approved learning device where the rules allow the cost to be used for that purpose.
The 2027 learning material amount has not yet been announced.

Do not treat an older book allowance figure as the confirmed 2027 amount.

Semester-only registration

Under the current university rules, where a student is registered for only one semester, the learning material allowance is reduced by 50%.

NSFAS Personal Care Allowance

Personal care support is intended to help with personal hygiene and wellness needs.

It is particularly relevant in the TVET allowance structure and in specific university or distance-learning circumstances.

Not every university student receives a separate personal care payment.

Eligibility depends on the student’s study and accommodation circumstances and the allowance rules for the academic year.

NSFAS Allowances for Distance-Learning Students

Distance students do not automatically receive the same allowance package as contact students.

Distance university students

Under the latest rules:

  • A distance university student studying less than 60% of a full academic credit load qualifies for the learning material allowance only.
  • Allowances are linked to the number of modules or course credits registered.
  • A student registered for one semester receives a reduced learning material allowance.
  • A distance university student registered for at least 120 credits in the academic year can qualify for the applicable personal care allowance.

Distance TVET students

Under the current bursary rules, a distance TVET college student qualifies for the personal care allowance only.

UNISA and other distance students should not use a contact university allowance table to estimate their payment.

Distance-learning funding follows different allowance rules.

NSFAS Allowances for Students With Disabilities

NSFAS provides additional support for eligible students living with disabilities.

The latest rules allow approved support to include:

  • Living allowance.
  • Learning materials.
  • Assistive devices.
  • Repairs and maintenance of assistive devices.
  • Human support.
  • Assessment costs.
Assistive devices and human support are not automatic cash allowances.

NSFAS must approve the relevant support and the required disability, medical and institutional conditions must be met.

If NSFAS asks for disability supporting records, see NSFAS Required Documents 2027 .

How NSFAS Allowance Payments Work

An approved NSFAS application is only one part of the payment process.

1
NSFAS confirms funding eligibility

The student first needs an eligible funding outcome.

2
The institution confirms registration

NSFAS needs valid registration information for the funded qualification.

3
Allowance eligibility is identified

The system determines which allowance categories apply to the student’s registration and circumstances.

4
Banking or payment details are verified

Where payment goes directly to the student, the required personal bank details must pass the applicable verification process.

5
Allowance is disbursed

The payment is made through the applicable NSFAS, institution or approved payment channel.

How University and TVET Payments Differ

University Students

University allowances can be administered through the university or another approved NSFAS payment arrangement. The payment method can therefore differ between institutions.

TVET College Students

NSFAS currently requires TVET beneficiaries to provide their own personal banking details so applicable allowances can be paid directly into their bank accounts.

Do not submit another person’s bank account for an NSFAS payment.

Where personal bank details are required, use the student’s own account and complete the verification requested by NSFAS. Never give anyone your banking password, PIN or OTP.

NSFAS Payment Dates 2027

The official 2027 allowance payment timetable has not yet been published.

Do not assume that every NSFAS allowance will be paid on one national date.

Payment timing can differ because:

  • University and TVET payment systems differ.
  • Institutions submit registration data at different times.
  • Allowance types are processed differently.
  • Accommodation payments can follow a landlord or institution process.
  • Banking verification can delay direct payments.
  • Supplementary payment runs may be needed where records are corrected.
A social media “NSFAS payment calendar” is not automatically official.

Check NSFAS and your institution for the payment arrangement that actually applies to you.

Approved by NSFAS but No Allowance Received

Funding approval does not automatically mean the allowance payment is ready.

If your status is approved but you have not received an allowance, check:

1
Has your institution submitted your registration?

NSFAS needs accurate registration information before allowances can be processed.

2
Is your registration correct?

A wrong course, institution or registration record can interfere with the allowance process.

3
Are your bank details correct?

Where direct banking is used, the account must meet the applicable verification requirements.

4
Do you actually qualify for that allowance?

Funding approval does not mean every allowance category applies to every student.

5
Is your accommodation approved?

Accommodation funding can be affected if the property does not meet the applicable accreditation and approval rules.

6
Is there a data mismatch?

NSFAS has previously had to hold payments where college and NSFAS data did not match until the records were corrected.

Start by checking your funding position through NSFAS Status Check 2027 .

What to Do If Your NSFAS Allowance Is Delayed

Problem Who to check with What to verify
Funding not finalised NSFAS Check the funding status in myNSFAS.
Registration missing or wrong University or TVET college Ask whether the correct registration record was sent to NSFAS.
Bank account not verified NSFAS or the payment channel Check the account holder, account number and verification status.
University allowance delayed Institution financial aid office Confirm whether NSFAS funds were received and whether your payment was processed.
Accommodation not paid Institution, NSFAS or accommodation process Confirm accreditation, reservation, lease and claim information where applicable.
Wrong allowance amount Institution or NSFAS Check registration load, accommodation type and allowance category.
Keep evidence when reporting an allowance problem.

Save screenshots of your funding status, bank verification details, institution communications and any payment or accommodation reference connected to the problem. Do not post your full ID number or bank account details publicly.

Can NSFAS Stop an Allowance?

An allowance can stop or be adjusted if the student no longer meets the conditions under which it was paid.

This can happen where:

  • The student deregisters.
  • NSFAS funding is withdrawn.
  • The student receives duplicate funding that affects NSFAS eligibility.
  • The registration information changes.
  • The student moves between accommodation and transport arrangements.
  • Payments were made incorrectly and need to be recovered.
  • Fraud or inaccurate information is identified.
Do not keep spending an allowance if you know you deregistered and are no longer entitled to it.

Incorrect payments can be recovered from the student. Contact the institution or NSFAS if you believe money was paid after your eligibility changed.

Do NSFAS Students Pay Registration Fees?

A qualifying NSFAS-funded student registered for an approved programme is not required to pay the normal initial registration fee where NSFAS has confirmed the applicable financial eligibility.

The registration cost forms part of the tuition funding arrangement.

Do not confuse registration funding with a cash allowance.

The registration amount is generally dealt with through the institution and does not mean the student receives the registration fee as spending money.

Allowance Problems After an Appeal

A successful funding appeal does not always produce an allowance immediately.

After an appeal succeeds, NSFAS and the institution can still need to complete:

  • Funding status updates.
  • Registration confirmation.
  • Allowance calculations.
  • Banking verification.
  • Accommodation verification where relevant.

For rejection and reconsideration rules, see NSFAS Appeal 2027 .

NSFAS Allowance Questions

How much is the NSFAS allowance for 2027?

The official NSFAS 2027 allowance amounts have not yet been published. Do not treat previous-year allowance amounts as confirmed 2027 rates.

When will NSFAS announce the 2027 allowance amounts?

NSFAS has not yet published a confirmed announcement date for the 2027 allowance rates. Allowance limits are set for the applicable academic year and should be checked when the 2027 funding rules are released.

What allowances does NSFAS cover?

Depending on the student category, NSFAS bursary support can include a living allowance, learning materials, accommodation or transport, personal care and additional approved disability support.

Does NSFAS pay tuition fees as well as allowances?

Yes. Qualifying NSFAS bursary funding covers tuition for an approved programme, while allowances provide additional support according to the student’s circumstances.

Does NSFAS pay a registration fee?

Qualifying NSFAS-funded students are not normally required to pay the initial registration fee for an approved funded programme once the applicable financial eligibility is confirmed. Registration forms part of the tuition cost.

Can I get both NSFAS transport and accommodation allowance?

No, not under the normal current funding structure. Students qualify for either accommodation or transport according to their circumstances.

Does NSFAS pay for private accommodation?

NSFAS can fund qualifying private student accommodation where the property and arrangement meet the applicable accreditation and approval rules.

Will NSFAS pay for unaccredited accommodation?

NSFAS warns that students residing in unaccredited accommodation without the required NSFAS and institution permission may not receive an accommodation allowance for that property.

Does NSFAS pay accommodation money directly to students?

Not in every case. Accommodation can be paid through NSFAS, an institution or directly to an approved accommodation provider depending on the arrangement.

What is the NSFAS living allowance for?

The living allowance is intended to help qualifying students cover food and ordinary day-to-day expenses while studying.

Is the meal allowance different from the living allowance?

Not always. Under the current funding structure, the living allowance covers food and incidental expenses. Catered accommodation can include meal costs within the accommodation arrangement.

Does every university student get a personal care allowance?

No. Personal care support applies to particular student categories and study arrangements. It should not be assumed that every university student receives a separate personal care payment.

Do UNISA students receive the same allowances as contact university students?

No. Distance university students follow different allowance rules based partly on their registered module or credit load.

What does a distance university student studying less than 60% qualify for?

Under the latest NSFAS rules, a distance university student studying less than 60% of a full academic credit load qualifies for the learning material allowance only.

Do TVET students receive NSFAS allowances in their bank accounts?

Under the current NSFAS payment system, TVET beneficiaries provide their personal banking details so applicable allowances can be paid directly into their own verified bank accounts.

Can I use my parent’s bank account for my NSFAS allowance?

Where NSFAS requires a student’s personal banking details, the student should provide the account requested for their own profile and complete the required bank verification.

Why is my NSFAS allowance delayed even though I am approved?

Possible reasons include missing or incorrect institutional registration data, banking verification problems, an incorrect allowance category, accommodation approval problems or a delay in the institution’s payment process.

When are NSFAS payment dates for 2027?

The official 2027 allowance payment schedule has not yet been published. Payment timing can also differ between universities, TVET colleges and allowance types.

Does NSFAS pay learning materials every month?

No. The university learning material allowance is an annual allowance under the current funding rules rather than an ordinary monthly living payment.

Can NSFAS stop paying my allowance?

Yes. Payments can be stopped or adjusted if funding is withdrawn, registration changes, the student deregisters, eligibility changes or an incorrect payment is identified.

Do students with disabilities receive extra NSFAS support?

Qualifying students with disabilities may receive additional approved support such as assistive devices, maintenance of assistive devices, human support and assessment costs in addition to applicable standard allowances.
