NSFAS Required Documents 2027

NSFAS Application Documents

Prepare the right documents before NSFAS requests them

The documents needed for an NSFAS application depend on the student’s identity, household, family circumstances, disability status and the information NSFAS can verify electronically.

No certification Latest NSFAS rule
Both sides Required when uploading a Smart ID Card
No driver’s licence Not accepted as proof of identity
30 days Latest missing-document response period
The final NSFAS 2027 document list has not yet been published.

As of 2026, NSFAS is still displaying the latest supporting document requirements for the 2026 funding cycle. Students preparing for 2027 can use these requirements as a checklist, but should follow the document request generated by myNSFAS when the 2027 application cycle opens.

Quick Answer

The latest NSFAS application requirements include the applicant’s ID or birth certificate, parent, guardian or spouse identity details, proof of income where applicable and special NSFAS forms depending on the applicant’s circumstances. These can include the Consent Form, Declaration Form, Disability Annexure and Orphan or Vulnerable Child Declaration. NSFAS generates the documents required for each application, so not every student uploads the same records.

If you have not yet started preparing for the new funding cycle, read our NSFAS Applications 2027 guide first.

NSFAS Documents to Prepare for 2027

The exact list depends on the information entered in the application. The latest NSFAS requirements include the following records where applicable.

Applicant ID or birth certificate Used to verify the applicant against Department of Home Affairs records.
Parent ID documents Required where parent information forms part of the household and financial assessment.
Guardian ID Required where the applicant declares a guardian.
Spouse ID Can be required where the applicant is married and spouse information forms part of the assessment.
Proof of income Required where applicable for the applicant, parents, guardian or spouse.
NSFAS Consent Form Used by NSFAS to verify relevant personal and financial information against authorised data sources.
NSFAS Declaration Form Used in certain non-SASSA applications to verify family or guardian information.
Disability Annexure Required for applicants living with disabilities where the disability funding process applies.
Vulnerable Child Declaration Used for qualifying applicants recognised as vulnerable children.
Other family records Death, marriage, divorce, retrenchment or guardianship records may be required depending on the application.
Do not upload every document on this page unless NSFAS asks for it.

The myNSFAS system generates a document list based on the type of application and the information you provide. Follow the request shown in your own application.

NSFAS ID Document Requirements

NSFAS verifies identity information against the Department of Home Affairs.

The latest application checklist includes:

  • Copy of the student’s ID or birth certificate.
  • Copy of parent ID documents where required.
  • Guardian ID where applicable.
  • Spouse ID where applicable.

Smart ID Card

If you upload a South African Smart ID Card, both the front and back of the card must be included.

A driver’s licence is not accepted as proof of identity for the NSFAS application.

NSFAS also states that an affidavit is not accepted as a substitute for the required proof of identity.

If you need to apply for or replace your South African ID, see our South African Smart ID Card guide.

For supported online Home Affairs ID services, see How to Use eHomeAffairs .

Does NSFAS Require Proof of Income?

Proof of income is required where applicable. NSFAS also validates income and employment information through authorised data sources.

The application system determines what supporting financial information is needed for your circumstances.

Do not leave out income because NSFAS may be able to verify it electronically.

The information entered in the application must still be accurate. NSFAS can verify household and employment information against independent data sources.

The NSFAS Consent Form allows NSFAS to validate information supplied by the applicant, parent, guardian or spouse against relevant third-party information sources.

Under the latest NSFAS FAQ:

  • The form applies to relevant non-SASSA applications.
  • It is completed by the applicant and/or parent, guardian or spouse as required.
  • SASSA recipients do not require the Consent Form under the current process.
Use the form issued for the correct application cycle.

Do not download an old NSFAS form from an unofficial website and assume it will be accepted for 2027. When applications open, use the form provided by NSFAS or generated through your application.

What Is the NSFAS Declaration Form?

The latest NSFAS process uses a Declaration Form in certain non-SASSA applications where parental or guardian information needs to be verified.

NSFAS currently states that the Declaration Form can be completed by the school principal or social worker where the form applies.

The current supporting-document page also states that the Declaration Form applies to applicants aged 34 years or younger where parental or guardian details need verification.

What if you say you have no family details?

An applicant who reports having no family member information, or whose circumstances require a non-SASSA declaration, may be asked to complete the relevant NSFAS Declaration Form.

Do not replace the NSFAS Declaration Form with your own affidavit.

Use the document generated or requested by NSFAS for your application.

Orphan or Vulnerable Child Declaration

NSFAS has a separate declaration for qualifying applicants who are under 18 and are orphans or are recognised as vulnerable children.

Under the latest rules, the Orphan or Vulnerable Child Declaration is completed by a social worker.

The vulnerable child category can include circumstances involving abuse, neglect, exploitation, risk of violence or substance abuse.

Use this form only when it applies to your circumstances.

The normal applicant does not need to upload the vulnerable child declaration simply because it appears on the NSFAS website.

Documents for Students With Disabilities

Applicants living with disabilities can be required to provide a completed NSFAS Disability Annexure.

The latest NSFAS requirements state that the form must be completed by an appropriately qualified professional who can confirm the disability and indicate the support required.

Depending on the disability, this may include an appropriately registered:

  • Medical doctor.
  • Optometrist.
  • Physiotherapist.
  • Head of a disability unit.
  • Other suitably qualified professional accepted under the NSFAS process.
The medical information should be submitted with the Disability Annexure where NSFAS requires it.

The current supporting-document instructions tell applicants to merge the medical report with the Disability Annexure when creating the file for upload.

What Documents Are Needed for a Guardian?

The required document depends on whether the person is a legally appointed guardian.

Situation Latest NSFAS requirement
Legal guardian appointed by a court Provide proof of guardianship issued by the court.
Guardian not appointed by a court The applicant may need the NSFAS Declaration Form under the current process.
Parent information available Provide the parent information requested in the application rather than listing someone else as a guardian simply because they support you financially.

Other Documents NSFAS May Request

Family circumstances can change which supporting records are needed. The current NSFAS supporting-document list includes the following where applicable:

  • Retrenchment letter.
  • Death certificate.
  • Divorce decree.
  • Proof of legal guardianship.
  • Marriage certificate.
  • Additional evidence required for an appeal.

If a parent or guardian has died, see our Death Certificate guide.

If NSFAS needs proof of marriage, see Marriage Certificates .

Do NSFAS Documents Need to Be Certified?

No.

The latest NSFAS FAQ states that the requirement for supporting documents to be certified has been removed.

Not needing certification does not mean document quality does not matter.

The uploaded copy must still be clear, complete and readable. Do not cut off ID numbers, names, signatures or parts of a document.

What Does NSFAS Documents Missing Mean?

If your myNSFAS account says Documents Missing, NSFAS needs additional supporting information before it can fully process your application.

This does not automatically mean your application has been rejected. It means you need to take action.

Under the latest application process, NSFAS gives students 30 days from the missing-document notification to upload the requested documents.

Do not ignore a missing-document request.

Under the current process, failure to submit the requested documents within the allowed period can result in the application being marked incomplete and not considered for funding.

You can also read NSFAS Status Check 2027 for the full application tracking process.

Why Does NSFAS Ask for Documents After You Apply?

NSFAS can verify some information electronically, but not every application can be assessed using electronic data alone.

A document may be requested because:

  • Family information needs confirmation.
  • Income information needs supporting evidence.
  • A parent or guardian record is incomplete.
  • The applicant has declared a disability.
  • The applicant is an orphan or vulnerable child.
  • Guardianship needs to be proved.
  • A family circumstance affects the financial assessment.
  • The document previously uploaded is unclear or incomplete.
