NSFAS Appeal 2027

Current Appeal Deadline 30 Days From receiving an unsuccessful application result
Rejected NSFAS Application

Ask NSFAS to reconsider an eligible funding decision

A student whose funding application is rejected, or a continuing student whose financial aid is withdrawn, may be able to submit an appeal if the decision falls within the NSFAS appeal rules.

NSFAS 2027 appeals are not open yet.

As of 2026, the main 2027 funding application cycle has not opened and there are no normal 2027 application outcomes to appeal. This guide uses the latest NSFAS appeal rules so students know how the process works. The page should be checked against the 2027 funding rules once NSFAS publishes them.

Quick Answer

If NSFAS rejects your application and the decision is appealable, log in to myNSFAS, read the rejection reason, choose the appeal option, explain why the decision should be reconsidered, upload the evidence requested for that reason and submit the appeal before the deadline. Under the current NSFAS rules, an eligible appeal must be submitted within 30 days after receiving the unsuccessful application result.

An appeal should deal with the actual reason NSFAS rejected or withdrew funding. It is not simply another copy of the original application.

Before appealing, check your status through our NSFAS Status Check 2027 guide and read the rejection reason displayed in myNSFAS.

Appeal, Missing Documents or Institution Problem?

These three situations need different action.

Funding decision rejected

Use the appeal process if NSFAS made an appealable funding decision and you have grounds and evidence showing why it should be reconsidered.

Documents are missing

Upload the documents requested by NSFAS. Do not wait for rejection and submit an appeal when the application can still be completed.

Registration record is wrong

Contact your university or TVET college if it has not submitted your registration information to NSFAS or has submitted the wrong record.

For document requests, use NSFAS Required Documents 2027 . That guide also covers missing documents and upload problems.

Who Can Submit an NSFAS Appeal?

Under the current NSFAS rules, an appeal can be considered from:

Rejected funding applicant A student who applied for NSFAS funding and received an unsuccessful application outcome.
Continuing student whose funding was withdrawn A continuing NSFAS student can appeal certain decisions to withdraw financial aid where the rules allow it.
Applicant with changed financial circumstances Certain income-based rejections can be reconsidered when household circumstances changed and suitable evidence is provided.
Certain academic eligibility cases Specific circumstances affecting academic performance can form the basis of an appeal where the current requirements are met.
An appeal does not guarantee NSFAS funding.

NSFAS assesses the appeal against the applicable funding rules and the evidence submitted. The current appeal rules also state that appeal decisions are subject to budget availability.

When Can You Not Use the Normal NSFAS Appeal Process?

The current NSFAS appeal page lists situations where students are not permitted to use the normal appeal route.

Situation What it means What to do
Qualification is not funded by NSFAS The student is registered for a qualification outside the applicable NSFAS funding rules. Check the qualification and institution funding position rather than submitting a normal appeal without a valid appeal ground.
N+ limit reached Current rules restrict normal appeals after the applicable N+ limit, subject to the final-year exception described by NSFAS. Check whether the specific final-year propensity-letter exception applies.
Certain gap-year academic cases The current appeal page excludes a gap-year student previously denied funding because the student failed to meet academic eligibility. Check the current academic funding rules before trying to appeal.
Institution registration record missing The university or TVET college has not sent the registration record to NSFAS. Contact the institution.
Institution registration record incorrect The institution supplied NSFAS with incorrect registration information. Ask the institution to correct the record.
Do not use an appeal to fix an institution’s registration mistake.

NSFAS specifically directs students with missing or incorrect institutional registration records to their university or TVET college.

How to Submit an NSFAS Appeal

1 Log in to myNSFAS

Open the official NSFAS website and access the account linked to your funding application.

2 Open the application outcome

Check the status and read the exact reason NSFAS gave for rejecting the application or withdrawing funding.

3 Check whether the decision can be appealed

Do not assume that every rejection has a normal appeal option.

4 Select the correct appeal reason

Choose the reason that matches your real circumstances.

5 Prepare the supporting evidence

The documents should prove the facts on which you are asking NSFAS to change its decision.

6 Upload the documents requested

Make sure every file is clear, complete and relevant to the appeal reason.

7 Review the appeal

Check that your reason and evidence address the rejection NSFAS actually gave you.

8 Submit within 30 days

Under the current rule, an eligible appeal must be submitted within 30 days after receiving the unsuccessful application outcome.

9 Track the appeal through myNSFAS

Keep checking the account for updates or additional instructions.

Appealing an NSFAS Household Income Rejection

One common rejection reason is that NSFAS data indicates the combined household income is above the applicable funding threshold.

Under the latest bursary rules, the normal financial eligibility threshold is generally:

  • R350,000 per year combined household income for the standard bursary route.
  • R600,000 per year for an applicant living with a disability.

The final thresholds for the 2027 cycle should be checked when NSFAS publishes the 2027 funding rules.

When can an income appeal be considered?

Current NSFAS appeal guidance allows certain income-related appeals where circumstances have changed or where the information used does not reflect the applicant’s real qualifying circumstances.

Examples include:

  • Household income changed after the original application.
  • A major household income contributor was retrenched or lost employment.
  • A major household income contributor became incapacitated.
  • A major household income contributor died.
  • The applicant was legally declared independent of biological parents.
  • A court order places responsibility for education costs on one parent.
  • The applicant qualifies under a recognised vulnerable or child-headed household circumstance.
Saying “our income is below R350,000” is not enough on its own.

An income appeal needs evidence that addresses the financial information NSFAS relied on.

Documents for an Income Appeal

The exact evidence depends on the reason selected. Current NSFAS appeal guidance lists records such as:

Latest SARS ITA34 Can be used where the appeal needs updated tax assessment information.
Recent proof of income Payslips or other income evidence can support the household income position where requested.
Retrenchment letter Useful where household income dropped because a contributor was retrenched.
Termination letter Can support evidence that employment ended after the original application information was supplied.
UIF evidence Current NSFAS appeal guidance lists UIF information showing unemployment or incapacity in certain changed-income cases.
Death certificate Can support an appeal where a parent, guardian or spouse who contributed to household income has died.
Court order Required where the appeal relies on the applicant having been legally declared independent of biological parents.
Divorce decree Can be relevant where a court has placed responsibility for education costs on one parent.
SASSA evidence Current appeal guidance lists SASSA evidence where an applicant appeals on the basis of being a qualifying SASSA beneficiary.
Social worker report Can apply to a qualifying child-headed or vulnerable household circumstance.

For general application and supporting-document rules, read NSFAS Required Documents 2027 .

If a death certificate is needed as evidence, see Death Certificate Applications .

Can You Appeal Academic Ineligibility?

Some continuing students can appeal an academic eligibility decision when specific serious circumstances affected their academic performance.

Under the current NSFAS appeal rules, qualifying circumstances can include:

  • Severe illness lasting at least two months during the academic term or examination period.
  • Death of an immediate family member during the academic term.
  • Being the victim of a violent crime.
  • Pregnancy and giving birth during the academic term.
  • A disability that materially affected the student’s ability to complete the academic term.
  • Evidence that the academic results received by NSFAS are incorrect.
Academic difficulty by itself is not automatically an appeal ground.

The current rules require the appeal to fit the applicable academic eligibility conditions and be supported by evidence.

Examples of academic supporting evidence

Appeal circumstance Examples of evidence currently required by NSFAS
Severe illness Medical evidence showing severe ill health during the relevant period. For certain N+ appeals, an institutional propensity letter is also required.
Birth during academic term Medical evidence confirming pregnancy and birth during the relevant academic period, together with other documents required for the appeal category.
Disability affected studies Medical evidence explaining how the disability affected completion of the academic period.
Death in immediate family Death certificate and any other documents required for the academic appeal category.
Victim of violent crime Evidence supporting that the student was subjected to the violent crime.
Incorrect academic results Official evidence showing that the academic results used by NSFAS are incorrect.

NSFAS N+ Appeals

The N+ rule limits the period for which a student can receive NSFAS funding relative to the normal duration of the qualification.

The current NSFAS appeal page refers to:

  • N+2 for the applicable general student category.
  • N+3 for students living with disabilities.

Students who have reached these limits are generally listed as unable to appeal, but the current rules provide a specific final-year exception where the student successfully submits the required institutional propensity letter.

The propensity letter must come through the institution.

For the current N+ final-year appeal route, the institution must confirm that the student has the propensity to complete the qualification within the additional academic period allowed by the applicable rule.

TVET final-subject cases

Current NSFAS appeal guidance also provides specific evidence routes for certain TVET students close to completing their qualifications, including:

  • A Report 191 student needing fewer than three subjects to complete the qualification.
  • An NC(V) student needing fewer than four subjects to complete the qualification.

The TVET college must provide the institutional evidence required by NSFAS for these appeal categories.

What If Your University or TVET Registration Is Wrong?

Do not automatically submit an appeal.

If the problem is that the institution:

  • Did not send your registration record to NSFAS.
  • Sent the wrong qualification.
  • Sent incorrect registration information.
  • Has not updated a registration change.

contact the university or TVET college first.

NSFAS currently says these registration-record enquiries should be directed to the institution.

The institution needs to correct or submit its record before NSFAS can work from accurate registration information.

How to Write a Strong NSFAS Appeal

A good appeal is factual and tied directly to the rejection reason. It does not need unnecessary emotional wording.

A useful appeal explanation should clearly state:

  1. What NSFAS rejection you are appealing.
  2. Why you believe the decision should be reconsidered.
  3. What changed or what information was incorrect.
  4. Which documents prove your explanation.

Example structure

Keep the explanation simple.

If NSFAS rejected the application because household income appeared above the threshold, explain the specific change in household income and attach the evidence required for that change. Do not write several paragraphs about unrelated problems.

How to Check an NSFAS Appeal Status

After submitting the appeal, continue checking your myNSFAS account.

Look for:

  • Confirmation that the appeal was submitted.
  • Requests for more information.
  • Changes to your funding status.
  • The final appeal outcome.

Use our NSFAS Status Check 2027 guide for account and tracking instructions.

Do not submit several appeals for the same decision simply because the status has not changed quickly.

Check the existing appeal and respond to any request from NSFAS first.

How Long Does an NSFAS Appeal Take?

Do not rely on a fixed number of days promised by unofficial websites.

Appeal processing can depend on:

  • The type of appeal.
  • Whether all supporting evidence was submitted.
  • Whether information must be verified with SARS, SASSA or another source.
  • Whether an institution must provide academic information.
  • The number of appeals being processed.
  • Funding availability.

Monitor myNSFAS for the actual result rather than assuming an appeal has failed because another student’s appeal was completed sooner.

What If Your NSFAS Appeal Is Unsuccessful?

Read the final decision carefully. An unsuccessful appeal does not mean you should submit false information or create another myNSFAS profile.

Depending on your circumstances, you may need to:

  • Ask your institution about other bursaries.
  • Check provincial, municipal, industry or private bursaries.
  • Consider the separate NSFAS student loan route if your household income falls within the applicable loan criteria.
  • Consider another funding source that fits your circumstances.
  • Apply again in a future NSFAS cycle if you remain eligible and the rules allow a new application.
Do not falsify household income or academic information after an unsuccessful appeal.

NSFAS validates information against independent sources and has a zero-tolerance approach to fraud and dishonest applications.

Common NSFAS Appeal Mistakes

1
Appealing before reading the rejection reason

The evidence may not address the actual reason the application was unsuccessful.

2
Missing the 30-day deadline

Under the current rules, eligible appeals must be submitted within 30 days after the unsuccessful result is received.

3
Uploading unrelated documents

A document is useful only if it supports the appeal ground.

4
Using an appeal for missing application documents

If NSFAS is still asking for missing documents, upload them through the application process instead.

5
Appealing an institution registration error

Missing or incorrect registration records should be corrected with the university or TVET college.

6
Using false income information

NSFAS can verify financial information against independent data sources.

7
Paying someone to guarantee the appeal

No agent can legitimately guarantee that NSFAS will overturn a funding decision.

Useful NSFAS Guides

Keep your NSFAS process in the correct order

Start with NSFAS Applications 2027 , check progress through the status guide , deal with any requested supporting documents , and use an appeal only when NSFAS has issued an appealable funding decision.

Certain income rejections can be appealed where the applicant has a valid appeal ground, such as changed household financial circumstances or incorrect information, and can provide the evidence required by NSFAS.

What documents do I need for an NSFAS income appeal?

The documents depend on the appeal reason. Current NSFAS guidance can require documents such as an ITA34, proof of income, retrenchment or termination letters, UIF evidence, a death certificate, court order, divorce decree or other supporting evidence.

Can I appeal if a parent lost their job?

A change in household financial circumstances can be considered under the current appeal rules where the applicable conditions are met and evidence of the change is submitted.

Can I appeal if a parent died?

Current NSFAS appeal guidance allows certain financial appeals where a major household income contributor died after the original application circumstances, subject to the required evidence.

Can I appeal NSFAS academic ineligibility?

Certain continuing students can appeal academic eligibility decisions where specific qualifying circumstances apply, such as severe illness, death in the immediate family, violent crime, childbirth, disability effects or incorrect academic results.

No, not merely because documents are missing. If NSFAS is requesting supporting documents, upload the required documents through myNSFAS within the period provided.

Does submitting an NSFAS appeal guarantee funding?

No. NSFAS assesses the appeal against the applicable rules and evidence. Current appeal rules also state that appeal decisions are subject to budget availability.

How do I check my NSFAS appeal status?

Log in to myNSFAS and continue monitoring the funding or appeal progress shown on your account.

How long does an NSFAS appeal take?

There is no single processing period that should be promised for every appeal. Processing depends on the appeal reason, supporting evidence, verification required and other factors.

Can someone submit an NSFAS appeal for me?

Protect your myNSFAS account credentials. Do not give another person your password or pay someone who promises guaranteed appeal approval.
