NSFAS 2027 applications are not officially open yet.

As of 2026, NSFAS has not published the official opening date or closing date for the main 2027 funding application cycle. Do not rely on websites or social media posts that give an exact 2027 deadline without an official NSFAS announcement.

Quick Answer

NSFAS applications for the 2027 academic year are expected to be submitted through myNSFAS once the new cycle is officially opened. The 2027 dates and final eligibility rules have not yet been published. Under the latest available rules, bursary applicants generally need South African citizenship or permanent residence and combined household income of no more than R350,000 per year, or R600,000 per year for a person with a disability. SASSA recipients automatically meet the financial eligibility test, but other funding requirements still apply.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, usually called NSFAS, provides government-backed financial aid to qualifying students studying at South Africa’s public universities and TVET colleges.

Applications are made online through a myNSFAS profile. Applying for NSFAS is separate from applying to a university or TVET college. You still need to apply for admission to the institution and qualification you want to study.

When Will NSFAS Applications for 2027 Open?

The official opening date for the main 2027 NSFAS funding cycle has not yet been announced.

The closing date has also not yet been announced.

Do not publish a guessed 2027 closing date as fact.

NSFAS application dates can change from one academic year to another. The correct date is the one announced by NSFAS for the 2027 funding cycle.

Once applications open, applicants should submit as early as practical rather than waiting until the last day. Early submission gives you more time to deal with identity problems, missing documents, account access issues or information that NSFAS asks you to correct.

When Did the Previous NSFAS Cycle Open?

The main 2026 application cycle was launched in September 2025 and closed on 15 November 2025.

That provides useful historical context, but it does not mean the 2027 cycle will use exactly the same dates.

Use the previous cycle only for preparation.

Prospective 2027 students can prepare during August and September, but should wait for the official NSFAS announcement before treating any opening or closing date as confirmed.

Who Can Apply for NSFAS?

The final 2027 eligibility criteria must still be published. Under the latest NSFAS bursary rules, the main requirements include the following.

South African citizen or permanent resident The latest application guidance includes South African citizens and permanent residents who meet the other criteria.
Financial eligibility Household income must fall within the applicable NSFAS threshold.
Public university or TVET college NSFAS does not fund students simply because they are enrolled at any tertiary institution.
Approved qualification The course must meet the funding and qualification requirements that apply to NSFAS.
Academic requirements Continuing students must meet the applicable academic progression requirements.
Valid contact details Applicants need an email address and cellphone number for the myNSFAS application process.
Meeting the household income limit does not by itself guarantee funding.

NSFAS also checks other eligibility information, the qualification, institution, academic requirements and information verified against government databases.

NSFAS Household Income Requirements

The latest published income rules are useful for students preparing for 2027, but they should be checked again when the 2027 eligibility criteria are released.

R350,000 Latest bursary ceiling

Combined gross household income must generally not exceed this amount per year under the latest bursary rules.

R600,000 Applicant with a disability

The latest rules provide a higher combined household income ceiling for applicants living with disabilities.

R350,001 to R600,000 NSFAS student loan range

The separate missing-middle loan scheme currently targets qualifying households within this income range.

What does combined household income mean?

NSFAS looks at the combined gross income of the relevant members of the applicant’s household according to its funding rules.

Do not calculate eligibility only from the applicant’s own income if the NSFAS application requires parent, guardian or spouse information.

NSFAS verifies financial information electronically.

The funding process uses information from government and other authorised data sources to assess income and eligibility. Applicants must give accurate household information even where no paper proof of income is requested immediately.

Do SASSA Recipients Qualify for NSFAS?

Under the latest NSFAS rules, SASSA grant recipients automatically qualify on the financial eligibility test.

This does not mean that every SASSA recipient is automatically funded regardless of all other requirements.

The applicant must still satisfy the other conditions that apply, including the institution, qualification and academic requirements.

SASSA financial eligibility can reduce the income-document burden.

NSFAS verifies information against SASSA and other government systems. Applicants should still answer every application question accurately and upload any document specifically requested on their myNSFAS profile.

Which Institutions Does NSFAS Fund?

NSFAS funding is aimed at qualifying students at public universities and public TVET colleges.

Public Universities Qualifying programmes at South Africa’s public universities can fall within NSFAS funding.
Public TVET Colleges Eligible programmes at public Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges can also be funded.
Private Institutions Students studying at private institutions are listed by NSFAS among those who should not apply under the current funding route.
NSFAS funding does not replace your university or college application.

You must separately apply to the institution where you want to study. A successful NSFAS application is not an admission offer.

If you are currently finishing school, our South Africa School Calendar 2027 can help you keep track of the school year while preparing for tertiary studies.

Who Should Not Apply for the NSFAS Bursary?

Under the latest NSFAS application guidance, categories that should not apply through the normal bursary route include:

  • Students whose studies are already funded 100% by another source.
  • Students who have already completed an undergraduate qualification and want NSFAS funding for a second undergraduate qualification, subject to the current funding rules.
  • Students who have completed a certificate qualification and want to study another certificate where the NSFAS exclusion applies.
  • Students studying at private institutions.
  • Students enrolled for qualifications that do not meet the applicable DHET or accreditation requirements.
Do not reject yourself based on an old NSFAS article.

Funding rules can change. If your situation is unusual, compare it with the eligibility criteria published for the actual 2027 cycle once those rules are available.

Documents to Prepare for NSFAS 2027

The exact 2027 document list has not yet been published. The latest NSFAS application guidance asks for documents based on the applicant’s circumstances.

Applicant ID or birth certificate Prepare a clear copy of the document NSFAS requires for your identity category.
Parent, guardian or spouse ID These records can be requested where their information forms part of the financial assessment.
Both sides of a Smart ID Card When a Smart ID copy is required, the latest NSFAS guidance asks for both sides.
Proof of income Required where applicable and where the system cannot complete the financial assessment without supporting evidence.
NSFAS Consent Form Used where NSFAS needs consent to verify information against third-party data.
Disability Annexure Applicants living with disabilities can be required to submit the applicable disability form and supporting medical information.
Vulnerable Child Declaration Can apply where the applicant is recognised as a vulnerable child under the relevant NSFAS process.
NSFAS Declaration Form Can be required where parental or family information needs to be declared under the relevant NSFAS rules.

Other documents that may be requested

Depending on your family circumstances, NSFAS may also ask for records such as:

  • A death certificate.
  • A retrenchment letter.
  • A divorce decree.
  • Proof of legal guardianship.
  • A marriage certificate.
  • Other supporting documents generated for your application.

If you need information about obtaining a Death Certificate or Marriage Certificate , use the related Home Affairs guides before the application deadline.

NSFAS no longer generally requires application documents to be certified.

The latest FAQ states that the certification requirement was removed. The documents must still be clear, correct and relevant to the application.

Make Sure Your ID Details Match Home Affairs

NSFAS validates identity information against the Department of Home Affairs.

When creating or using your myNSFAS account, make sure your:

  • ID number is correct.
  • First names match your identity record.
  • Surname matches your identity record.
  • Date and personal details are consistent with your official records.
Do not change the spelling of your name just to make the NSFAS form accept it.

If your official Home Affairs record is incorrect, deal with the identity record itself rather than entering information that does not match your legal identity.

For identity document information, see Apply for an Identity Document .

If you need to deal with an online Home Affairs ID process, read How to Use eHomeAffairs .

How to Prepare Your myNSFAS Account

You do not need to wait until the final minutes of the application window to find out that you cannot access your account.

Before the 2027 cycle opens, make sure you have:

Your own email address Use an email account that you can access throughout the application and registration period.
A working cellphone number NSFAS uses cellphone details for account access and communication.
Your ID information The identity details must match the Home Affairs record.
A secure password Do not give your myNSFAS password to friends, agents or people who promise funding.
Do not share one email address or cellphone number between several applicants.

The latest NSFAS FAQ states that no two applicants may use the same cellphone number or email address for the application account.

What if you forgot your myNSFAS password?

Use the Forgot Password function from the official NSFAS website. NSFAS can send account recovery information to the registered email address and cellphone number.

How to Apply for NSFAS 2027

Once NSFAS officially opens the 2027 funding application window, the normal online process should be completed through myNSFAS.

1 Open the official NSFAS website

Use the official website and select the myNSFAS option. Avoid application links sent by unknown people.

2 Create or log in to your myNSFAS account

Existing users should recover their original account if necessary rather than creating conflicting profiles.

3 Check your identity information

Make sure your names and ID number match the information verified against Home Affairs.

4 Choose the funding application

Complete the 2027 funding application that applies to your intended study and funding route.

5 Enter household information

Provide accurate parent, guardian, spouse and household information where requested.

6 Answer the financial questions

Do not hide income or change household information to try to fit the bursary threshold.

7 Upload documents requested by your application

The system generates the supporting records needed for your circumstances. Upload clear and complete files.

8 Review the application

Check your contact details, identity information, household details and answers before submission.

9 Submit the application

Do not leave the application saved as a draft and assume it has been submitted.

10 Track the application

Return to myNSFAS regularly to check your funding progress and respond to any request for missing information.

Can You Apply for NSFAS Before a University Accepts You?

Do not wait for final university admission if the NSFAS funding window is already open and you are eligible to apply.

In the previous cycle, NSFAS was able to assess the financial eligibility of first-time entering students before every final institutional acceptance had been confirmed. Admission information can be matched later in the funding process.

NSFAS application and university admission are two separate processes.

Apply to the universities or TVET colleges you want to attend and submit your NSFAS funding application within the NSFAS deadline. Do not assume one application automatically completes the other.

What Does an NSFAS Bursary Cover?

The latest NSFAS bursary information lists funding categories that can include:

  • Registration costs.
  • Tuition fees.
  • Learning materials.
  • Living allowances where applicable.
  • Personal care allowances where applicable.
  • Transport or accommodation according to the applicable rules.
Do not use old allowance amounts as the confirmed NSFAS 2027 rates.

Allowance amounts and caps can change from one academic year to the next. Use the 2027 funding guidelines once NSFAS and the Department publish them.

Does NSFAS pay everything directly to the student?

No. Different funding components can be paid or administered through different arrangements involving NSFAS, the institution, accommodation arrangements or the student’s approved payment channel.

What If Your Household Earns More Than R350,000?

Students above the normal bursary income ceiling should not automatically assume that NSFAS has no funding route for them.

NSFAS currently operates a separate student loan scheme for the missing middle. The current loan income range is:

Combined household income from R350,001 to R600,000 per year

This is a loan rather than the normal NSFAS bursary and carries different terms and funding conditions.

The student loan application process is also handled through NSFAS. Applicants who qualify for the loan must accept the applicable loan agreement.

A student loan must be compared carefully with a bursary.

Do not assume that an NSFAS loan has the same repayment rules, allowances or conditions as NSFAS bursary funding. Read the loan agreement before accepting it.

If NSFAS funding does not fit your circumstances, you can also compare other education finance options in our South African Loan Guides .

For one example, see the Nedbank Student Loan guide.

Do Returning NSFAS Students Apply Again?

Students who are already funded do not automatically submit a fresh first-time funding application every year simply because a new academic year begins.

Continuing funding is subject to NSFAS rules, including academic progression and continued eligibility.

When might you need to apply again?

The latest NSFAS FAQ gives examples where another application can be needed. For example, a person who was approved for funding but did not register at a university or TVET college for the approved year can need to reapply for the next funding cycle.

Applicants who previously applied and were declined may also apply in a later cycle if they still need funding and meet the new cycle’s requirements.

Do not rely on an old approval forever.

Check your myNSFAS account and the rules for your current academic year, especially if you changed institutions, did not register, changed qualifications or had a break in studies.

How to Check Your NSFAS Application Status

After submitting your application, log in to your myNSFAS profile and open the application or funding progress section.

The current NSFAS application guidance uses status descriptions such as the following.

Application Submitted
Your application has been received. Keep checking the portal for further action.
Documents Missing
NSFAS needs one or more additional documents before the application can be fully processed.
Under Review
The application is being assessed against the applicable eligibility information.
Approved
Funding has been approved, subject to the applicable funding and registration requirements displayed by NSFAS.
Rejected
The application did not meet one or more requirements. Read the reason shown before deciding whether an appeal is available.
Status wording can change as NSFAS improves the portal.

Always use the explanation and action shown inside your own myNSFAS account rather than relying only on screenshots from another applicant.

What If NSFAS Requests Missing Documents?

Do not ignore a missing-document notification. An application can remain incomplete if NSFAS cannot obtain the information needed to assess it.

For the latest cycle, NSFAS gave applicants 30 days after the missing-document notification to submit the requested records. The exact 2027 process should be checked when the new cycle opens.

1 Log in to myNSFAS

Do not upload documents through a link from an unknown WhatsApp message.

2 Read the exact request

Check which document NSFAS says is missing.

3 Upload the correct file

Make sure the whole page is visible and readable.

4 Check that submission completed

Do not assume selecting the file on your phone automatically uploaded it.

5 Return to the portal

Keep checking until the application moves to the next assessment stage or NSFAS gives another instruction.

Can You Appeal a Rejected NSFAS Application?

Yes, where the NSFAS decision and rules allow an appeal.

The latest NSFAS guidance gives eligible rejected applicants 30 days from receiving the application outcome to complete an appeal.

A basic appeal process involves:

  1. Log in to myNSFAS.
  2. Read the rejection reason.
  3. Check whether the decision is appealable.
  4. Complete the appeal information.
  5. Upload the supporting documents relevant to the reason.
  6. Submit within the deadline shown by NSFAS.
  7. Track the appeal through the portal.
An appeal is not simply a request to apply again.

Address the actual reason NSFAS rejected the application. If the issue was household income, academic progression or missing family information, provide evidence relevant to that issue.

Do You Need Banking Details When Applying?

NSFAS payment arrangements can require students to provide personal banking details at the appropriate stage. The exact process depends on the student category, institution and payment arrangements used for the academic year.

When NSFAS asks for banking information:

  • Use your correct personal banking details.
  • Check the account number carefully.
  • Use the bank name shown by your bank.
  • Complete any verification process requested by NSFAS.
  • Do not give another student’s bank account simply to receive money faster.

If a form asks for your bank’s branch code, see Universal Branch Codes for Major South African Banks .

Do not give your banking password or OTP to anyone claiming to work for NSFAS.

A legitimate funding application does not require you to send your online banking password to an agent, student representative or social media account.

Common NSFAS Application Mistakes

Mistake Why it causes problems What to do instead
Waiting until the closing day You have little time to fix account, ID or document problems. Apply as early as practical after the official window opens.
Using a shared cellphone number or email Account verification and recovery can become difficult. Use your own accessible contact details.
Entering a nickname instead of legal names NSFAS verifies identity details against Home Affairs. Enter your names as they appear on your official identity record.
Giving incorrect household income information NSFAS validates financial information against authorised data sources. Declare the correct financial and household information.
Assuming saved means submitted An application that remains incomplete may not enter the full assessment process. Confirm that the portal shows your application as submitted.
Ignoring missing-document notices The application can remain incomplete or be closed under the applicable process. Upload the exact document within the period given by NSFAS.
Not applying to a university or TVET college NSFAS funding does not provide institutional admission. Complete both the institution application and NSFAS funding process.
Paying a person to guarantee approval No private person can legitimately guarantee the outcome of the NSFAS eligibility assessment. Apply through the official NSFAS system.

NSFAS 2027 Preparation Checklist

Get these items ready before applications open:
  • Check that your ID details match Home Affairs.
  • Make sure you can access your myNSFAS profile.
  • Reset your password now if necessary.
  • Create your own working email address.
  • Keep your own active cellphone number.
  • Prepare parent, guardian or spouse information where applicable.
  • Prepare proof of household income where it may be required.
  • Prepare both sides of your Smart ID Card if NSFAS asks for the copy.
  • Collect death, divorce, guardianship or other family documents if they apply to your circumstances.
  • Apply separately to public universities or TVET colleges.
  • Check that the qualification you want is eligible for NSFAS funding.
  • Watch the official NSFAS website for the confirmed 2027 opening and closing dates.

Avoid NSFAS Application Scams

High-demand application periods attract fake accounts, agents and fraudulent application links.

No one can sell you guaranteed NSFAS approval.

NSFAS assesses applications using its eligibility rules and verified information. Paying someone does not legally change household income, academic results or funding eligibility.

Never give another person:

  • Your myNSFAS password.
  • Your email password.
  • Your banking password.
  • Your banking OTP.
  • Control of your cellphone number.
  • False income information to submit on your behalf.

NSFAS currently provides a fraud reporting channel at [email protected].
