SASSA SRD Status Declined? Meaning of Every Error Code and How to Fix It

SASSA SRD R370 Declined Status

Find the reason first, then fix the right problem

A declined SRD status does not always mean your entire application is finished. SASSA checks eligibility for individual periods, so you need to look at the exact reason shown next to the declined month before deciding what to do.

Declined SASSA did not approve that assessment period
Reason Code Tells you what caused the decision
Appeal Use when you believe the decision is wrong
Each Month Disputed declined months are appealed separately
Quick Answer

If your SASSA SRD R370 status says Declined, open the official status result and read the reason shown for that month. A message such as alternative_income_source_identified, identity_verification_failed, uif_registered or existing_sassa_grant tells you what SASSA found during its checks. Fix any incorrect information first and, if you still believe you qualified for that month, use the official SRD appeal process .

Do not submit a brand-new SRD application just because one month was declined.

A monthly decline is normally dealt with by checking the reason and appealing that particular decision if it is wrong. Starting over does not correct an income flag, Home Affairs mismatch, UIF record or fraud-related referral.

What Does SASSA SRD Status Declined Mean?

A declined status means SASSA did not find you eligible for the SRD grant for the period being assessed. The useful part is the reason shown with the result. That reason tells you which check caused the problem.

For example, SASSA may have matched your ID against another social grant, employment information, UIF, NSFAS, Home Affairs details or financial information. A decline can also happen when information held by another government system is wrong or out of date.

Read the exact month before you act.

Being approved previously does not automatically mean the next month will also be approved. In the same way, a decline for one month does not automatically mean every later month will be declined.

1 Check the exact reason

Do not appeal blindly. Read the code or message shown next to the declined month.

2 Correct the real problem

Fix incorrect identity, contact or official records where necessary before relying on an appeal.

3 Appeal if SASSA is wrong

Challenge the particular monthly decision through the official appeal system.

SASSA SRD Declined Codes and What They Mean

The wording can look technical, especially when the status contains underscores. The table below translates the main decline and referral messages into plain English.

Status or code What it means What you should do
alternative_income_source_identified SASSA’s checks found financial information suggesting that you had income or financial support above the applicable SRD means-test limit for that assessment. Check the month carefully. Appeal if the money identified was not income or you believe the decision is wrong.
identity_verification_failed Your personal information did not match the information used for identity verification, including Home Affairs records. Correct your names or identity record first, then dispute the declined month if appropriate.
existing_sassa_grant SASSA found that you were receiving another social grant for yourself during the assessed period. Check whether the other grant record is correct. Appeal if SASSA matched you incorrectly.
nsfas_registered The verification process found NSFAS support linked to you for the relevant period. Appeal if you were not actually receiving the identified NSFAS support during that month.
uif_registered SASSA found UIF information indicating that you were registered for or receiving UIF-related support during the period. Check your UIF position and appeal if the information does not reflect your real circumstances for that month.
gov_payroll_registered Your details were matched to employment in a government institution. If you were no longer employed during the assessed month, dispute the decision through the appeal process.
age_outside_range Your age did not fall within the SRD age requirements for that assessment. Check your date of birth with Home Affairs if it is wrong. A person aged 60 or older should check eligibility for the Older Persons Grant instead.
deceased_record_on_DHA Home Affairs information showed the applicant as deceased. Correct the Home Affairs record first if you are alive and the record is wrong, then resolve the SRD decision.
debtor SASSA records indicate that a previous SRD payment was made when the applicant was later found not to have qualified. Contact SASSA about the debt record. Do not treat this like a normal monthly decline.
referred_linked_risk_mobile The cellphone number used for the application has been linked to a fraud or risk concern. Do not simply change random details. Contact SASSA and complete any identity or fraud verification requested.
referred_safps The application was referred because of fraud-risk information associated with SAFPS. Contact SASSA and deal with the referral or identity issue before expecting normal processing.
self_exclusionary_response_found An answer supplied during the application indicated that you did not meet one of the SRD eligibility requirements. Review the information you supplied. If the answer was incorrect or your circumstances for the month were different, follow the official dispute process.

Alternative Income Source Identified

alternative_income_source_identified

SASSA found financial information that affected your means test

This is one of the most confusing decline messages because people often read the word “income” and assume SASSA has found an employer.

The message can relate to financial inflows identified during the monthly eligibility checks. Money moving through an account can therefore become important even when the applicant does not think of it as a salary.

What should you do?

  • Check the exact month that was declined.
  • Think about money that entered accounts linked to you during that period.
  • Do not change your bank account simply to try to remove the decline.
  • If you believe you still met the SRD means test, appeal the particular month.
Changing banking details is not an appeal.

Banking details tell SASSA where an approved payment should go. They do not overturn a monthly decision that says an alternative income source was identified.

If the problem is actually the account used for payment, see our SASSA SRD banking details guide .

Identity Verification Failed

identity_verification_failed

Your details did not match the identity record used by SASSA

This usually points to a mismatch involving your ID number, names, surname or other identity information checked against official records.

How to fix identity verification failed

Check your ID number

Make sure the 13-digit identity number on the SRD application belongs to you and was entered correctly.

Check your names and surname

Use your legal names as they appear in the Department of Home Affairs record. Small differences can matter during automated identity checks.

Correct the SRD names if necessary

SASSA provides a dedicated names and surname update service for SRD applicants whose personal information needs correction.

Correct Home Affairs if the government record itself is wrong

Changing the SRD application will not solve a problem where the underlying Home Affairs information is incorrect.

Complete any identity verification requested by SASSA

If SASSA gives you a legitimate identity or biometric verification step, complete it through the official process before expecting the application to move forward.

Appeal the declined month if the decision should now be reconsidered

Once the identity problem is corrected, use the official appeal route where you still disagree with the monthly decision.

Existing SASSA Grant

existing_sassa_grant

SASSA found another social grant linked to you

This message means the SRD verification process identified another SASSA social grant being received by the applicant during the period under consideration.

What should you do?

First check whether you really were receiving another grant for yourself during that month.

If the record is correct and that grant made you ineligible for SRD, an appeal will not change the underlying eligibility issue. If the record is wrong, or the other grant had already ended before the month being assessed, lodge an appeal for that month.

NSFAS Registered

nsfas_registered

SASSA found NSFAS support linked to your details

The SRD system uses information from other institutions when checking whether an applicant is receiving financial support. If NSFAS funding is identified, the status can be declined for the relevant period.

How to deal with an NSFAS decline

  • Check whether you actually received NSFAS funding during the declined month.
  • Do not appeal simply because you are no longer studying now; the month being assessed is what matters.
  • If the NSFAS information is wrong or relates to a different period, appeal the declined month.

UIF Registered

uif_registered

SASSA found UIF information linked to you

This status means the eligibility check found UIF information that affected your SRD assessment.

Do not assume that changing your bank account will fix it. UIF is a separate eligibility check.

What should you do?

  • Check whether you were receiving UIF or had an active UIF-related record during the month.
  • If you recently stopped working, remember that government databases may still need to reflect your updated position.
  • If the UIF information is incorrect for the assessed period, lodge an appeal.
Appeal the month that is wrong.

A UIF decline for one assessment period does not mean you should submit a completely new SRD application.

Government Payroll Registered

gov_payroll_registered

Your details matched government employment information

This message appears when the checks indicate that the applicant was employed by a government institution during the period being assessed.

How to fix it

If you really worked for a government department during that month, the status reflects the employment information SASSA found.

If you had already left the job and believe the payroll information is outdated, check your employment records and appeal the affected month. Explain the position based on the period SASSA actually assessed rather than your current employment situation.

Age Outside Range

age_outside_range

Your age does not meet the SRD age requirement

This code can appear where the applicant is below the minimum qualifying age or has reached the age at which the SRD grant is no longer the appropriate SASSA grant.

If you are under 18

You do not qualify for the adult SRD grant. Depending on the household’s circumstances, a parent or primary caregiver may instead need to check whether a child-related SASSA grant is available.

If you are 60 or older

Check whether you meet the requirements for the SASSA Older Persons Grant rather than repeatedly appealing an SRD age decision.

What if your age is wrong?

If your date of birth or identity information is incorrect in the official record, deal with that record first. An appeal cannot make an incorrect Home Affairs date of birth disappear.

Deceased Record on DHA

deceased_record_on_DHA

Home Affairs records show the applicant as deceased

This is an identity-record problem, not a banking problem. SASSA cannot simply ignore a Home Affairs record showing that the person has died.

If you are alive, correct the Home Affairs record first.

Do not pay someone who claims they can “unlock” the grant or remove the deceased status from SASSA’s system for you.

Once the official identity record is corrected, follow the SASSA process for the affected SRD application and dispute the declined period where appropriate.

SASSA SRD Debtor Status

debtor

SASSA says a previous payment was made when you did not qualify

A debtor status is different from an ordinary monthly decline. It has historically been used where SASSA records show that SRD money was paid for a period in which the beneficiary was later found not to have qualified.

Do not use random bank details found online to repay an alleged SASSA debt.

Contact SASSA first and confirm the debt, the amount and the correct official repayment process.

For assistance, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

Referred Linked Risk Mobile

referred_linked_risk_mobile

The cellphone number has triggered a fraud or risk check

This is more serious than a simple spelling mistake. The application has been flagged because of a risk concern connected with the cellphone number used for the SRD application.

What should you do?

  • Check your status only through SASSA’s official website.
  • Do not give an OTP to someone who offers to remove the referral.
  • Contact SASSA if you do not recognise changes or activity on your application.
  • Complete any legitimate identity verification SASSA requests.

If your cellphone details have genuinely changed, see our SASSA phone number guide .

Referred SAFPS

referred_safps

Your application has been referred because of fraud-risk information

SAFPS refers to the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service. A referral means the application needs more attention before it can move through the normal SRD process.

Do not assume that seeing this message automatically proves that you personally committed fraud. If you do not recognise the reason for the referral, contact SASSA and follow the official identity or fraud-resolution instructions given for your application.

A referred status and an ordinary declined status are not exactly the same problem.

If your application has been referred, deal with the identity or fraud issue rather than repeatedly changing your banking details or submitting another application.

Self Exclusionary Response Found

self_exclusionary_response_found

An answer on the application indicated that you did not qualify

This message can appear when information supplied during the application itself indicates that the applicant falls outside an SRD requirement.

Go back over the information you supplied and think about the exact month under review. If the answer was incorrect, or the decision no longer reflects your circumstances for that assessment period, use the official process available to correct or dispute it.

Which SASSA Declines Can Actually Be Fixed?

Problem Can you correct something? Should you appeal?
Wrong names or identity details Yes. Correct the identity information first. Yes, if the monthly decision remains wrong.
Alternative income incorrectly identified There may be no profile field to change because this is an eligibility decision. Yes, if you believe you qualified for that month.
Incorrect UIF record Check the underlying UIF information. Yes, if the monthly result is incorrect.
Incorrect NSFAS record Check the underlying funding information. Yes, if it does not apply to the declined month.
Government payroll record is outdated Check your employment record. Yes, if you were not employed during the assessed month.
Wrong Home Affairs deceased record Yes. Home Affairs must correct the record. Deal with the corrected identity record before expecting approval.
You genuinely fall outside the age requirement No, unless the date of birth itself is wrong. An appeal will not change your real age.
Referred fraud or mobile risk Identity or fraud verification may be required. Follow SASSA’s instructions for the referral.

How to Appeal a Declined SASSA SRD Status

If the reason is wrong and you believe you qualified for the month that SASSA declined, use the official SRD appeal system.

Check your SRD status first

Open SASSA’s official SRD status checker and identify the exact declined month and reason.

Fix information that is genuinely wrong

For example, correct a name mismatch or Home Affairs problem before expecting an appeal to succeed on the same incorrect information.

Open the official appeal service

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals .

Enter the applicant’s details

Use the South African ID number and the cellphone number linked to the SRD application and follow the verification prompts.

Select the declined month

Appeals are linked to individual monthly decisions. If several months were declined and you disagree with each decision, deal with each relevant month.

Choose the correct appeal reason

Do not select a reason simply because it sounds more likely to succeed. Use the reason that accurately explains why you believe SASSA’s decision was wrong.

Submit the appeal

Complete the process and keep a record of the month you appealed.

Check the appeal status later

Use the official appeal service to follow the outcome rather than submitting duplicate appeals for the same month.

Do not leave the appeal until the last minute.

The official appeal guidance says an appeal should be lodged within 30 days of the decision where possible and must not be lodged later than 90 days.

Should You Appeal Every Declined Month?

Appeal every declined month that you genuinely disagree with.

For example, if June was approved but July and August were declined for alternative_income_source_identified, an appeal for July does not automatically challenge August as well.

One appeal does not automatically cover all declined months.

The official SRD appeal guidance requires an appeal in relation to each month where you were rejected and disagree with the decision.

When You Should Not Appeal

An appeal is useful when the decision is wrong. It is not a way to remove a qualification rule that genuinely applies to you.

An appeal may not help if:

  • You genuinely did not meet the age requirement for the month.
  • You were receiving another benefit that made you ineligible for SRD.
  • You were employed in circumstances that made the decline correct.
  • You are challenging information that is still incorrect at Home Affairs.
  • You are dealing with a debtor or fraud-referral issue that first needs direct resolution.

What If Your Status Changes from Approved to Declined?

This can happen because the SRD grant is assessed repeatedly. Approval for an earlier period does not guarantee approval for every later period.

Instead of focusing on the fact that you were paid before, open the new declined month and read the new reason.

A change from approved to declined can be linked to a change in financial information, another benefit appearing in a verification database, an identity issue or another eligibility check.

What If You Were Declined but Have No Income?

If your status says alternative_income_source_identified even though you do not have a job, do not assume the status means SASSA found a salary.

Look at the specific assessment month and consider all money that may have entered accounts associated with you. If the money did not represent income that made you ineligible and you believe the decision was wrong, use the appeal process.

Do not close a bank account simply because you were declined.

Changing the account used to receive an approved grant does not erase an eligibility decision already made for a particular month.

Declined but Banking Details Are Verified

Verified banking details do not mean that your SRD application must be approved. They solve a different part of the process.

Bank verification checks whether SASSA can use the payment information linked to you. Your monthly SRD status still depends on the eligibility checks.

So if your bank says verified but your status says declined, deal with the decline reason, not the banking verification.

Approved After Appeal but No Payment?

Winning an appeal fixes the disputed decision, but the payment still has to move through the payment process.

Check the SRD status for the affected month again and look for payment information. Then check the bank account or payment method linked to the grant.

For this situation, see our SASSA SRD R370 balance and payment guide .

Common Mistakes After a SASSA Decline

Do not pay someone to “remove” a SASSA decline code.

No private person can legitimately delete a UIF, Home Affairs, income or fraud-risk result from SASSA’s official system for a fee.

  • Submitting another application immediately: this usually does not fix the reason that caused the original decline.
  • Changing bank accounts repeatedly: banking changes do not overturn eligibility decisions and unnecessary changes can create more verification work.
  • Appealing without reading the reason: first understand what SASSA says is wrong.
  • Ignoring a Home Affairs mismatch: an appeal cannot reliably solve an identity record that remains incorrect.
  • Using an unofficial appeal website: enter your identity information only on trusted government services.
  • Appealing only one month when several months are wrong: each disputed declined month needs its own appeal.
  • Giving someone an OTP: never hand over a verification code to a person promising to release your R370.

SASSA SRD Declined Questions

Why does my SASSA SRD status say declined?

SASSA’s checks found that you did not meet one or more SRD requirements for that assessment period. Open the declined month and read the exact reason code before deciding what to fix or appeal.

Does declined mean I will never receive the SRD grant again?

No. A declined result relates to the assessment being shown. Later periods can have different results if you meet the eligibility requirements.

What does alternative income source identified mean?

It means SASSA’s financial eligibility checks found information suggesting income or financial support that affected your means test for that month. If you believe the decision is wrong, appeal that specific declined period.

What does identity verification failed mean?

It means your personal details did not match the identity information used by SASSA for verification. Check your ID number, legal names and Home Affairs record, correct any mismatch and then deal with the declined month.

What does UIF registered mean on SASSA?

It means UIF information linked to you affected the SRD eligibility check. If that information does not correctly reflect the period being assessed, you can dispute the monthly decision.

What does gov payroll registered mean?

It means SASSA’s checks matched your details to employment at a government institution for the period under consideration. If you had already stopped working and the record is outdated, appeal the affected month.

What does existing SASSA grant mean?

It means SASSA found another social grant being received by the applicant for the relevant period. Check whether the other-grant record is correct before appealing.

What does NSFAS registered mean?

It means NSFAS financial support was identified during the eligibility checks. If you did not receive that support during the declined month, use the official appeal process.

What does deceased record on DHA mean?

It means the Department of Home Affairs record used during verification shows the applicant as deceased. If you are alive and the record is wrong, the Home Affairs record needs to be corrected before the SRD problem can be properly resolved.

What does referred linked risk mobile mean?

It means a fraud or risk concern has been associated with the cellphone number used for the application. Contact SASSA and complete the official identity or fraud-verification process rather than repeatedly changing application details.

What does referred SAFPS mean?

It means the application has been referred because of fraud-risk information associated with SAFPS. If you do not recognise the issue, contact SASSA and follow the official instructions for resolving the referral.

Can I appeal a declined SASSA SRD status?

Yes, when you disagree with the monthly decision. Use the official SRD appeal service and lodge an appeal for each declined month you want challenged.

How long do I have to appeal a SASSA decline?

Official SRD appeal guidance says applicants should appeal within 30 days of the decision where possible and not later than 90 days.

Do I appeal every declined month separately?

Yes. If you disagree with the decision for more than one month, the official appeal process requires an appeal in relation to each declined month.

Should I reapply if my SRD is declined?

Do not submit a new application simply because one monthly status is declined. Check the reason, correct any real problem and use the appeal process if the monthly decision is wrong.

Will changing my bank account fix a declined SRD status?

Not normally. Banking details control where an approved payment is sent. They do not overturn a decline caused by income, UIF, NSFAS, age, another grant or identity information.

Who can I contact if I cannot fix my declined status?

For an unresolved SRD application, identity, referral or status problem, contact SASSA on the toll-free number 0800 60 10 11 or use the assistance options provided on the official SASSA website.
