Why Would You Need to Update Your Banking Details?
There are several common reasons why people need to change their SASSA SRD banking details:
Important Rules Before You Start
Understand these rules before updating โ they will save you a lot of frustration:
- โThe bank account must be in your own name. SASSA cannot pay into a friend’s, family member’s, or anyone else’s account.
- โYour phone number must also be registered in your own name. SASSA sends a secure link via SMS to verify your identity.
- โUpdating banking details only fixes payment problems. If your grant was declined due to an income or identity issue, you need to appeal separately.
- โNew banking details only apply to future payments โ after SASSA has verified the new account.
Step-by-Step: How to Update Your Banking Details Online
All you need is your phone or any internet-connected device. This is the fastest and easiest method.
-
1
Go to the Official SASSA SRD Website Open your browser and go to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/banking-details-update โ do not use any other website.
-
2
Enter Your 13-Digit ID Number Type it in carefully and click Submit. Asylum Seekers or Special Permit Holders should select their option and enter their asylum or passport number instead.
-
3
Receive Your OTP (One-Time PIN) SASSA will send an SMS with a secure link to the mobile number you used when you applied.
-
4
Click the Link and Verify Your Identity Open the SMS and click the secure link. Complete the e-KYC identity verification step by following the on-screen instructions.
-
5
Enter Your New Banking Details Fill in your bank name (e.g. Capitec, FNB, Absa, Nedbank, TymeBank), account number, and account type (Savings or Current/Cheque). Double-check every digit.
-
6
Submit and Wait for Confirmation Review all details, then click Submit. Take a screenshot of the confirmation message. SASSA will verify your new account within 5โ10 working days.
No Bank Account? Here Are Your Other Options
Not everyone has a bank account โ and that is okay. SASSA offers alternative ways to collect your grant:
TymeBank โ the easiest option if you have no account
Open a TymeBank account for free at any Pick n Pay or Boxer store with just your ID. No paperwork, no minimum balance, no monthly fees.
How to Use the Moya App to Update Banking Details
The Moya App is a free, data-zero app โ meaning it does not use your airtime or data. You can manage your SASSA grant right from your phone.
- 1Download the Moya App from the Google Play Store or App Store
- 2Sign in or register using your SASSA details
- 3Tap “SASSA Services” โ “Update Banking Details”
- 4Enter your new bank name, account number, and account type
- 5Review and submit โ the app will notify you once the update is confirmed
What Happens After You Update?
Once you submit your new banking details, here is what to expect:
- โSASSA will verify your new account โ this takes 5โ10 working days
- โYour current month’s payment may still go to the old account if the update was late in the month
- โFrom the next approved payment cycle, your grant will go to the new account
- โYou can check your payment status anytime at srd.sassa.gov.za

SASSA Banking Details Scam Warning
Scammers are actively targeting SRD beneficiaries. Be very careful:
- โNever share your ID number, bank details, or OTP with anyone who contacts you first. SASSA will never call, WhatsApp, or email you asking for banking details.
- โAvoid fake websites. Only use srd.sassa.gov.za โ the official SASSA website. Many fake sites look identical to the real one but are designed to steal your information.
- โNo one can charge you to update your details. The entire process is free. Anyone asking for money to “process” your banking update is scamming you.
