Why Would You Need to Update Your Banking Details?

There are several common reasons why people need to change their SASSA SRD banking details:

โ†’You opened a new bank account and your old one is closed
โ†’You entered the wrong account number when you first applied
โ†’Your payment failed or bounced and SASSA could not deposit your grant
โ†’You want to switch from a SASSA card to a personal bank account
โ†’You recently changed banks and need to update to your new account
๐Ÿ’ก
All of these are completely normal situations โ€” and SASSA makes it easy to fix them online.
๐Ÿ“‹

Important Rules Before You Start

Understand these rules before updating โ€” they will save you a lot of frustration:

  • โœ“The bank account must be in your own name. SASSA cannot pay into a friend’s, family member’s, or anyone else’s account.
  • โœ“Your phone number must also be registered in your own name. SASSA sends a secure link via SMS to verify your identity.
  • โœ“Updating banking details only fixes payment problems. If your grant was declined due to an income or identity issue, you need to appeal separately.
  • โœ“New banking details only apply to future payments โ€” after SASSA has verified the new account.

SASSA Banking Details Scam Warning

Scammers are actively targeting SRD beneficiaries. Be very careful:

  • โœ—Never share your ID number, bank details, or OTP with anyone who contacts you first. SASSA will never call, WhatsApp, or email you asking for banking details.
  • โœ—Avoid fake websites. Only use srd.sassa.gov.za โ€” the official SASSA website. Many fake sites look identical to the real one but are designed to steal your information.
  • โœ—No one can charge you to update your details. The entire process is free. Anyone asking for money to “process” your banking update is scamming you.
