Comprehensive Guide to NWU Application
Applying to the North-West University (NWU) is an entirely online process. The key to success is meeting the Admission Point Score (APS), adhering to the strict deadlines, and uploading all required documents correctly.

Check Requirements
- A valid, unique, and personal email address. [An email address can only be used by one (1) applicant!]
- You will need to register with this email address before you can apply. Your email address will also be used as your username and will be used to log in to your application profile after you have registered.
- You will also receive a temporary password at first and after you have changed it, you will always use your email address and new password to log onto your application profile.
Before applying, you must verify that you meet both the minimum Admission Point Score (APS) and the specific subject requirements (e.g., Mathematics, Physical Science).
How to Calculate Your NWU APS Score
NWU calculates your APS using a unique method:
- Count Six Subjects: Your APS is based on your six best-performing subjects from your National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent.
- Exclude Life Orientation: Life Orientation (LO) is NOT included in the APS calculation at NWU.
- Conversion: Use the standard South African APS scale (Level 7 = 80-100%, 7 points; Level 6 = 70-79%, 6 points, etc.) to convert your percentage marks into points.
- Total: Sum the points of your best six subjects to get your total APS.
Admission Status
NWU issues acceptance in two phases based on your Grade 11/12 results:
- Conditional Offer: Issued based on your final Grade 11 results or mid-year Grade 12 results, provided you meet the minimum APS and subject requirements.
- Final Offer: Issued once your final Grade 12 (NSC) results are available, confirming you meet all academic conditions.
Program-Specific Requirements
- Requirements vary by faculty and program. For example:
- Engineering: APS of 31+, Mathematics 70%, Physical Sciences 60%, and a selection test.
- Health Sciences (e.g., Nursing): APS of 26+, specific subjects like Life Sciences, and selection based on academic merit.
- Law: APS of 28+, English 60%. Check the full list on NWU’s fields of study page for details, as they may change.
