All four institutions UKZN, DUT, MUT, and UNIZULU are located in KwaZulu-Natal and primarily use the Central Applications Office (CAO) system for undergraduate admissions.

The Central Applications Office (CAO) System
You will use the CAO website to apply to all four universities (UKZN, DUT, MUT, UNIZULU) with a single application.

Application Documents
- Grade 11 final results, grade 12 June exam results, National Senior Certificate or Statement of Results
- Identity Document or ID card
- Students transferring from other universities should submit an academic record and a certificate of conduct.
Non-South African applicants
- A valid passport
- A valid medical insurance cover
- Police clearance certificate
- SGCE, GCE, GCSE, IGCSE or Cambridge School Certificate

Step-by-Step CAO Application
Check Minimum Requirements
- Prospectus: Download the latest CAO handbook or check the individual university websites for the APS (Admission Point Score) and subject requirements for your desired courses (e.g., BSc Engineering at UKZN, Diploma in Accounting at DUT).
- Programme Codes: Note down the CAO Programme Codes for your selected courses (e.g., MN-M-DIT for a specific MUT Diploma).
Apply Online
- Go to https://www.cao.ac.za/ and click the “Apply” button.
- Follow the prompts to fill in the online application form, including your personal details, academic history, and list your chosen programmes (up to 6) in order of preference.
Pay and Submit
- Pay the required non-refundable CAO application fee. Keep the proof of payment.
- Submit your completed application. You will receive a CAO Number which is vital for all future correspondence.
Upload Certified Documents
Log back into the CAO system using your CAO Number to upload certified copies of the following:
- South African ID (or Passport for international applicants).
- Final Grade 11 results (if currently in Grade 12).
- Senior Certificate/National Senior Certificate (if you have already matriculated).
- Proof of Payment for the CAO fee.
Track Status
You can track the progress of your application through the “Check My Application” link on the CAO website using your CAO number. Your chosen universities will use your final Grade 12 results (or previous final results) to make an offer.
