How to Check Your SASSA Grant Status
Check whether your SASSA application is still being processed
The correct way to check a SASSA status depends on the grant. Standard social grant applications can be tracked through SASSA Services, while SRD R370 applicants use the separate official SRD system.
To check a standard SASSA grant application submitted through SASSA Services, log in to the official portal. The home page displays a table of active applications and their current statuses. To check the SRD R370, use the dedicated official SRD website and follow the status-check process for your application. Do not use an unofficial website that asks for banking passwords, card PINs or OTPs.
Use SASSA Services for applications such as Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency and Grant-in-Aid where your application is connected to the online portal.
Use the dedicated SASSA SRD system. SRD is not tracked in exactly the same way as the normal social grants and can have a different outcome for different months.
How to Check a Standard SASSA Grant Application Status
SASSA’s online Services Portal lets registered users see active applications associated with their profile.
Use the official government service rather than a third-party status website.
Use the account that was used to submit or manage your grant application.
The portal displays active applications associated with the SASSA Services user.
Check that you are looking at the correct grant application if more than one application appears.
The status tells you which stage the application has reached and whether SASSA needs more information from you.
SASSA Services also sends status-change notifications to the service user and applicant.
What SASSA Application Statuses Mean
The official SASSA Services portal lists several application stages. The wording shown on your own account should be treated as the current status of your application.
Your application has been successfully submitted and is waiting for a SASSA official to review it. You normally need to wait for the assessment unless SASSA contacts you for more information.
The application has been captured by a SASSA official and is being processed. It can still need further approval before a final outcome is reached.
SASSA has found that the application is incomplete. Check your SMS, email and portal for the outstanding documents or information that must be supplied.
The application has been processed and is waiting for final assessment or approval. Pending does not itself mean that the application has been rejected.
The application was saved but has not been completed and submitted. Return to the application and finish the outstanding sections before expecting SASSA to assess it.
If your application is still marked as incomplete, completing the form is more important than repeatedly checking its status. SASSA cannot make a normal final decision on an application that has not been properly completed.
What Does Application Documents Outstanding Mean?
This status means SASSA has identified missing information or supporting documentation that prevents the application from being completed normally.
The SASSA Services portal advises applicants to watch for an email or SMS explaining what needs to be corrected.
If the application was made through SASSA Services:
- Log in to your account.
- Select the relevant application.
- Look for the supporting-document section.
- Check which required item is outstanding.
- Upload or provide the requested document through the available process.
- Check the application again after the correction is submitted.
Provide the document SASSA actually requests for that application. Different grants require different supporting records.
What Does SASSA Application Pending Mean?
Application Pending means the application has moved through processing but is still waiting for the final assessment or approval stage.
It does not mean:
- The application has definitely been approved.
- The application has definitely been rejected.
- A payment has already been released.
A duplicate application can create confusion. First check the existing application and respond if SASSA asks for further information.
How long can a SASSA grant application take?
Government guidance for standard grants such as the Child Support, Disability and Grant-in-Aid applications states that processing can take up to three months.
If the grant is approved, the applicable standard grant is generally paid from the date on which the successful application was made.
Missing documents, medical assessment requirements, identity problems, means-test verification or other application issues can affect how quickly an application reaches a final outcome.
What If Your SASSA Grant Is Approved?
Approval means SASSA has accepted the application for the grant, subject to the applicable payment and beneficiary administration process.
After approval, check:
- The grant that was approved.
- Your payment method.
- Your banking or Postbank information where applicable.
- The relevant payment date.
- Any further SASSA communication.
An approved grant does not mean money will necessarily appear at the same moment the application status changes. The payment method and scheduled grant cycle still matter.
See SASSA Payment Dates for the current regular grant calendar.
What If a Standard SASSA Grant Is Declined?
If a standard social grant application is unsuccessful, SASSA should tell you why the application was not approved.
If you disagree with the decision, government guidance for standard social grants allows an appeal to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days after notification.
The COVID-19 SRD R370 has a separate appeal process. Older Persons, Child Support, Disability and other standard grants follow the applicable standard social-assistance appeal route.
How to Check Your SASSA SRD R370 Status
The SRD R370 uses a separate electronic system from SASSA Services.
Use the SASSA SRD website rather than an unofficial status-check service.
Follow the official application-status process shown on the SRD website.
Use the details connected to the SRD application, including the registered contact information where requested.
SRD eligibility is assessed on a monthly basis, so do not assume that one month’s outcome automatically applies to every other month.
If approved, check any payment information displayed. If declined, read the reason and decide whether the information is correct before appealing.
Why Can Your SRD Status Change Every Month?
The SRD R370 is assessed under its own eligibility rules and SASSA uses verification information to determine whether an applicant qualifies for assistance.
A person can therefore have an approved outcome for one month and a different outcome for another month.
SASSA’s SRD system uses information from the applicant and verification data from government bodies and financial institutions as part of determining eligibility.
If you disagree with more than one monthly SRD rejection, the appeal process requires the disputed months to be dealt with individually.
If your SRD application shows a rejection, read SASSA SRD Status Declined before taking the next step.
SASSA Approved but No Payment Received
An approved status does not automatically mean the problem is with SASSA’s application assessment.
Check the following.
Regular grants are staggered across different payment days. SRD R370 uses a different payment process.
Check the bank or Postbank arrangement attached to the grant.
Incorrect or unresolved payment information can prevent an approved SRD payment from reaching the intended account.
A review or verification requirement can affect an existing beneficiary’s payments.
A beneficiary specifically instructed to complete life certification should follow the deadline given by SASSA.
For an SRD payment problem, see SASSA SRD Banking Details .
How to Check a SASSA SRD Appeal Status
SRD appeals are handled through the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals.
The appeal website provides an option to lodge an appeal or check an appeal status.
The current process uses:
- The applicant’s South African ID number.
- The cellphone number used for the SRD application.
- An OTP or PIN sent through the official process.
If SASSA declines several months and you disagree with each decision, an appeal needs to be lodged for each disputed month.
Current Tribunal guidance says the SRD appeal should be lodged within 30 days, but not later than 90 days after the rejection. The Tribunal aims to communicate the appeal outcome electronically.
See How to Appeal a Declined SASSA SRD Application .
What Does a SASSA Grant Review Mean?
A grant review is different from checking the status of a new application.
SASSA reviews existing beneficiaries to confirm that they still meet the requirements for social assistance.
A review can involve checking:
- Income.
- Assets.
- Identity information.
- Bank accounts.
- Medical circumstances.
- Continued eligibility.
SASSA has warned beneficiaries selected for grant reviews to follow the instructions and attend or complete the required process. Failure to complete a required review can affect continued payment of the grant.
What Is SASSA e-Life Certification?
SASSA also uses life certification to confirm that beneficiaries remain alive and that grant records remain legitimate.
The current SASSA self-service system can provide e-Life Certification using secure digital identity verification.
SASSA has stated that beneficiaries specifically identified for immediate e-Life Certification must complete the process within the time given. Failure to comply can cause a payment delay or grant suspension.
SASSA Status Check Problems
| Problem | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No application appears | You may be using the wrong account, the application may not have been submitted or the grant may use another system. | Check the account and application route. SRD applicants should use the SRD website. |
| Application saved but not submitted | The application is incomplete. | Open it and finish all required sections. |
| Documents outstanding | SASSA needs further supporting information. | Check the portal, email and SMS for the exact document required. |
| Pending for some time | The application has not yet reached its final outcome. | Keep checking the application and respond to any SASSA request. Contact SASSA if the normal processing period has passed without clarification. |
| Approved but no payment | The problem may relate to payment timing, banking, review or payment administration rather than application eligibility. | Check the payment date and payment method. |
| SRD declined | SASSA did not approve that monthly SRD assessment. | Read the reason and use the Tribunal appeal process if you disagree. |
| Cannot receive OTP | Your registered cellphone information may be wrong, unavailable or no longer accessible. | Use the official SASSA process to deal with the cellphone-number problem. |
If your cellphone number has changed, see SASSA Change Phone Number .
Be Careful With Fake SASSA Status Websites
A SASSA status check involves sensitive personal information. Use official government systems when entering your ID number, cellphone details or grant information.
A person cannot legitimately guarantee an approval, remove a decline or release a payment in exchange for your banking credentials.
Be cautious of a website or message that:
- Promises instant grant approval.
- Charges a fee to check a normal application status.
- Asks for your bank password.
- Asks for your card PIN.
- Requests an OTP that you did not initiate.
- Claims it can change a declined result without the official appeal process.

For standard grants, government guidance generally states that an approved grant is payable from the date on which the successful application was made, subject to the applicable grant rules.
Why does my SRD status change from one month to another?
SRD eligibility is assessed monthly. An applicant can therefore have different outcomes for different months depending on the information available during each assessment.

What is SASSA e-Life Certification?
It is a SASSA process used to confirm that a beneficiary remains alive and legitimately entitled to receive the grant. SASSA currently provides a digital self-service option for life certification.
Can I check SASSA status without paying anyone?
Yes. Use the official SASSA Services or SRD systems. Do not pay someone who claims they can guarantee approval or release a grant payment.
SASSA Status Help
Still cannot find your application status?
Check that you are using the correct system for your grant. Standard grant applications and SRD R370 are not tracked in exactly the same place. If the official system does not resolve the problem, contact SASSA and have your ID and application information available.
