Before You Call SASSA

Have these ready so the agent can find your record quickly:

  • your 13-digit ID number,
  • for SRD, the cellphone number you used to apply and, if you have it, your application ID,
  • any SMS or letter SASSA sent you, and
  • a pen and paper to write down the reference number of your call.

SASSA staff may ask questions to confirm your identity. They will never ask for your card PIN, a one-time PIN (OTP) or your banking app password.

Visiting a SASSA Office

Some things can only be done in person, such as most new applications for permanent grants and some reviews.

  • Go early in the day and avoid payment days if you can.
  • Take your ID and any documents SASSA asked for. See our list of required documents for SASSA grants.
  • If you are applying for someone else, take a letter of authority and both IDs.
  • Ask for proof that you visited or applied, such as a receipt or reference number.

How to Email SASSA

When you email [email protected]:

  1. Use a clear subject, for example “Child Support Grant payment not received, ID ending 1234”.
  2. Include your full name, ID number and cellphone number.
  3. Describe the problem in a few short sentences and give the dates.
  4. Attach clear photos of any letters or SMSs if they help.
  5. Do not send your PIN, OTP or bank card number.

Email replies can take time. If your problem is urgent, phone the toll-free line as well.

Beware of Fake SASSA Numbers and WhatsApp Groups

  • SASSA does not charge for applications, appeals or status checks.
  • Do not pay anyone who says they can “speed up” or “approve” your grant.
  • Be careful with WhatsApp numbers shared on social media. If a number is not listed on SASSA’s own website, treat it as unofficial.
  • Only enter your details on websites that end in sassa.gov.za.
  • Never share your card PIN or an OTP.

If you think someone has applied for a grant using your ID, report it to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 and open a case at your nearest police station. You can also report corruption in government services to the National Anti-Corruption Hotline on 0800 701 701.
