This page gives the gold price in rand per ounce, per gram and per carat, with a live price and a one-year chart, and explains why the price moves. These are prices for the metal itself, called the spot price. Coins, bars and jewellery cost more than this, and buyers pay less when you sell. Gold prices change every minute while markets are open, so use these figures as a guide, not as an offer. This page is information, not financial advice.

| 1 gram | R2,152 | $129 |

These rand figures use the spot price of $4,023.10 an ounce at 09:31 SA time on 4 November 2026, from gold-api.com and checked against a second source, and the European Central Bank’s reference rate of R16.6379 to the dollar for 3 November 2026. They are rounded and updated every morning.
Gold Price per Gram by Carat
Carat (written ct, or K on many price sites) tells you how much of a piece is gold. Pure gold is 24 carat. An 18 carat ring is 18 parts gold out of 24, so 75% of its weight is gold and the rest is other metals.
| Carat | Gold content | Value of the gold per gram on 4 November 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 24 ct | 100% (pure gold) | R2,152 |
| 22 ct | 91.7% | R1,973 |
| 18 ct | 75% | R1,614 |
| 14 ct | 58.3% | R1,255 |
| 9 ct | 37.5% | R807 |
The table shows only the value of the gold inside each gram. A jeweller selling you a new ring adds the cost of making it and a profit. A buyer paying you for old jewellery pays less than this value.

Why the Gold Price Moves
Gold has no fixed price. It moves with buying and selling on world markets, and a few things push it most.
- The US dollar. Gold is bought and sold in dollars, so a stronger dollar usually pulls the gold price down. On 3 November 2026, Reuters said a stronger dollar and rising US government bond yields pushed gold lower.
- Interest rates. Gold pays no interest. When interest rates are high, or are expected to rise, money tends to move to savings and bonds that pay interest. On 3 November 2026, traders saw a 79% chance that the US Federal Reserve would raise rates in December, according to the CME FedWatch tool quoted by Reuters.
- Worry about the world. In times of war, trade fights or market crashes, many investors buy gold as a safer place for their money, which pushes the price up. When the worry eases, some of them sell.
- Inflation. When prices of everyday goods rise fast, some people buy gold to protect the value of their money.
How the rand changes the gold price
For South Africans, there is a second price that matters: the rand against the dollar. The rand price of gold is the dollar price multiplied by the exchange rate.
So even if gold stays at $4,023 an ounce, a weaker rand makes gold dearer in rand. At R16.64 to the dollar, an ounce costs about R66,936. If the rand weakened by 50 cents to R17.14, the same ounce would cost about R68,947. A stronger rand does the opposite. You can check the latest rate on our dollar to rand converter.
Spot Price, Buying Price and Selling Price
The spot price is the price for large amounts of gold traded between banks, refiners and big investors. Ordinary buyers and sellers do not get exactly this price.
- When you buy gold coins or small bars, you pay more than the spot price. The extra amount, called the premium, covers making the coin or bar, the dealer’s costs and profit. Small items usually carry a bigger premium per gram than large ones.
- When you sell gold, the buyer pays less than the spot value. For jewellery, the buyer also has to test, melt and refine the gold, so you get less than the value in the carat table above.
- Prices differ from one buyer to the next. Get quotes from more than one buyer, ask how they test the carat, and watch the gold being weighed on a scale you can see.
- Keep the slip when you buy gold. If you later sell it for more than you paid, SARS may tax the profit, and you will need proof of what you paid.
How to Work Out the Gold Price Yourself
You can work out the rand value of gold in three steps.
- Find the latest spot gold price in dollars per ounce, for example in the live price box above.
- Multiply it by the latest dollar to rand rate. This gives the rand price per ounce.
- Divide by 31.1035 to get the price per gram of pure gold, then multiply by the carat divided by 24 for jewellery gold.
For example, with gold at $4,023.10 and the rand at R16.6379, one ounce is R66,936. Divided by 31.1035, one gram of pure gold is R2,152. For 18 carat, multiply by 18 and divide by 24: R1,614 a gram.

Gold Price Questions
How much is 1 gram of gold in South Africa?
On 4 November 2026, one gram of pure 24 carat gold was worth about R2,152, based on a spot price of $4,023.10 an ounce and the rand at R16.64 to the dollar. One gram of 18 carat gold held about R1,614 of gold. A shop or buyer will charge or pay a different amount.
How much is 18 carat gold per gram?
18 carat gold is 75% gold. On 4 November 2026, the gold in one gram of 18 carat was worth about R1,614. A jeweller’s price for new jewellery is higher, and a buyer’s price for old jewellery is lower.
Why does the gold price in rand change when the dollar price stays the same?
The rand price is the dollar price multiplied by the exchange rate. When the rand weakens against the dollar, gold costs more in rand, even if the dollar price does not move. When the rand strengthens, gold gets cheaper in rand.
Is gold at a record high?
No. Gold’s record high is $5,589.38 an ounce, reached on 28 January 2026, CBS News reported. On 4 November 2026, gold traded at about $4,023, about 28% lower than that record.
Why do gold buyers pay less than the gold price?
The gold price is for large amounts of pure gold. A buyer of old jewellery has to test it, melt it and refine it, and needs a profit too, so they pay less than the value of the gold inside. Getting quotes from more than one buyer helps you get a fair price.
