Discount Calculator: Work Out What You’re Actually Paying

Retailers are good at making a discount look bigger than it is. “Up to 60% off,” a red sticker over the old price, a countdown timer ticking down on a sale that somehow never actually ends. Most of the time the maths is straightforward, but every so often it isn’t, especially once a second discount gets stacked on top of the first, or a “was/now” price doesn’t quite add up the way you’d expect. Our Discount Calculator strips all of that back to the actual numbers, what you’re saving, what you’re paying, and what a stacked promotion really adds up to once you do the maths properly.

Here’s how each part of it works, and the one mistake almost everyone makes with stacked discounts.

The Basic Discount Calculation

A single discount is simple enough. Take the original price, multiply it by the discount percentage, and that’s what you save. Subtract that from the original price and you’ve got your final price. On a R899 item at 25% off, that’s R899 × 25% = R224.75 saved, bringing the final price down to R674.25.

Where it gets slightly less intuitive is going the other direction, working out what something originally cost when all you can see is the sale price and the discount percentage. You can’t just add the discount percentage back onto the sale price, since the percentage was calculated on the original amount, not the reduced one. Instead, divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount as a decimal). So R674.25 at a known 25% discount works out to R674.25 ÷ 0.75 = R899, the correct original price. This is exactly what the reverse discount mode in the calculator above does for you.

The Stacked Discount Trap

This is where most people get caught out, and it’s worth understanding properly because retailers rely on this confusion more than you’d think. When you see “25% off, plus an extra 10% off” advertised together, it’s tempting to add those up and assume you’re getting 35% off. You’re not.

Each discount applies to whatever price is left after the discount before it, not to the original price. So on that same R899 item: the first 25% discount brings it down to R674.25. The second discount, 10%, then applies to R674.25, not to the original R899. That’s a further R67.43 off, landing you at a final price of R606.83.

Work out what percentage that actually represents off the original R899, and it comes to roughly 32.5%, not the 35% a simple addition would suggest. It’s not a huge gap in this example, but stack three or four discounts together, which happens more often than you’d expect during big sales events, and the difference between the “advertised” combined discount and the real one gets noticeably larger. Why This Matters More During Big Sales

Stacked discounts show up constantly around major sales events, “site-wide sale, plus extra off clearance items,” loyalty member discounts on top of an already-discounted price, or a coupon code applied at checkout after a promotional price. Each layer compounds off the previous one, and retailers rarely spell out the true combined percentage because the individually-listed numbers look more impressive added together than they do once correctly calculated.

This isn’t necessarily dishonest, most of the time it’s just how percentage discounts mathematically work, and retailers are simply listing each discount as it’s actually applied. But it does mean the headline “up to 40% off” type of messaging is worth checking against the real final price rather than taking at face value, especially for a bigger purchase where the difference between the advertised and actual savings could be a meaningful amount of money.

A Few Other Things Worth Watching For

  • “Was” prices that were never really the selling price. Some retailers show a “was” price that was only ever charged for a very short window, making the current discount look bigger than the item’s typical selling price actually was. If a price seems too good, it’s worth a quick search to see what the item has actually sold for recently.
  • Discounts calculated before delivery or other fees. A percentage off the item price doesn’t necessarily apply to shipping, so the overall saving on your total order can end up smaller than the advertised discount on the product itself.
  • VAT and discount order. Depending on how a retailer structures their pricing, a discount might be applied before or after VAT is calculated, which can shift the final number slightly.   • Rounding. Retailers often round the final price to a “nicer” number (R674.25 might get advertised as R674 or even R675), which is a small difference but worth knowing about if your own maths doesn’t land exactly on the price you see in-store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do stacked discounts really not add up the way they’re advertised?

Correct, they don’t. “25% off, plus an extra 10%” is not the same as 35% off. Each discount is applied to the price remaining after the previous one, so the true combined saving is always slightly less than simply adding the percentages together.

How do I work out what something cost before a discount?

Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount as a decimal). A R500 sale price at a 20% discount means the original price was R500 ÷ 0.80 = R625.

Does the order of stacked discounts matter?

No, mathematically it doesn’t matter which discount is applied first, the final price comes out the same either way. What matters is that each one applies to the reduced price left by the one before it, not to the original price.

Why does my calculation not match the exact price at checkout?

Usually rounding, or a promotion that excludes certain items, applies to a subtotal rather than individual items, or is capped at a maximum discount amount. Always treat the calculator as a strong estimate and confirm against the actual total at checkout.
