What Is an RDP House?

RDP stands for Reconstruction and Development Programme β€” a South African government programme that builds and provides free houses to qualifying low-income families. You may also hear it called BNG housing (Breaking New Ground), which is the updated name for the same programme.

Free house. Your name. Your title deed.

RDP houses are given completely free of charge. After eight years, you also receive the Title Deed β€” meaning the house legally becomes yours. You are still responsible for water, electricity, and municipal bills once you move in.

What Do the Status Messages Mean?

When you check your RDP status, you may see one of these:

StatusWhat It Means
Pending Your application has been received and is still being reviewed
Approved Great news! Your application passed the review β€” you will be contacted about next steps
Awaiting Documentation DHS needs more documents from you before they can proceed
Completed Your application has been fully processed and your house is ready for allocation
⏳

How Long Does the Waiting Take?

RDP housing is managed at a local level β€” each municipality has its own waiting list and timeline. In high-demand areas like Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town, waiting times can stretch from two to ten or more years.

βœ…
The best things you can do while waiting: Check your status regularly so nothing is missed. Keep your contact details up to date with your local housing office. Respond immediately to any communication from the Department of Human Settlements.
🚨

Watch Out for RDP Housing Scams

Criminals target people waiting for RDP houses. Be aware of these common scams:

  • βœ—“Pay R500 to speed up your application” β€” this is a scam. RDP applications and allocations are always FREE.
  • βœ—“We can get you an RDP house faster” β€” no private individual or company has the power to fast-track your application.
  • βœ—Fake websites asking for your ID and banking details β€” only use www.hssonline.gov.za or www.dhs.gov.za.
β›”
Report scammers immediately If someone asks for money in connection with an RDP house, report them to the Department of Human Settlements or the South African Police Service (SAPS).
