What Is an RDP House?
RDP stands for Reconstruction and Development Programme β a South African government programme that builds and provides free houses to qualifying low-income families. You may also hear it called BNG housing (Breaking New Ground), which is the updated name for the same programme.
Free house. Your name. Your title deed.
RDP houses are given completely free of charge. After eight years, you also receive the Title Deed β meaning the house legally becomes yours. You are still responsible for water, electricity, and municipal bills once you move in.
Do You Qualify? Check These Requirements First
You qualify for an RDP house if you meet all of the following:
- βYou are a South African citizen or have permanent residency
- βYou are 18 years or older
- βYour household earns R3,500 or less per month
- βYou are married, living with a partner, or a single person with dependants
- βYou have never owned property before
- βYou have never received a government housing subsidy before
5 Ways to Check Your RDP Status
Choose the option that works best for you:
Method 1: Check Online via the HSS Portal
The Housing Subsidy System (HSS) Online Portal is the official government platform. Use it anytime β 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- 1Go to www.hssonline.gov.za
- 2Create an account β fill in your name, phone number, and email address
- 3Verify your email β click the confirmation link sent to your inbox
- 4Log in using your email, password, and the OTP sent to your phone
- 5Find the “My Housing Subsidy” section
- 6Enter your 13-digit ID number and click Search

Method 2: Check by SMS
The simplest option if you do not have internet access or struggle with websites.
Your 13-digit ID number, then a space, then your surname
You will receive an SMS reply with your current application status. It is free or costs a standard SMS rate depending on your network.
Method 3: Call the Department
Prefer speaking to a real person? Call the toll-free hotline and have your ID number ready.
Method 4: Email & Method 5: Visit In Person
Email the Department
Useful for a written record of your query. Send to [email protected] and include your full name, 13-digit ID number, application reference number (if you have it), and a brief explanation of your query.
What Do the Status Messages Mean?
When you check your RDP status, you may see one of these:
| Status | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Pending | Your application has been received and is still being reviewed |
| Approved | Great news! Your application passed the review β you will be contacted about next steps |
| Awaiting Documentation | DHS needs more documents from you before they can proceed |
| Completed | Your application has been fully processed and your house is ready for allocation |
How Long Does the Waiting Take?
RDP housing is managed at a local level β each municipality has its own waiting list and timeline. In high-demand areas like Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town, waiting times can stretch from two to ten or more years.
Watch Out for RDP Housing Scams
Criminals target people waiting for RDP houses. Be aware of these common scams:
- β“Pay R500 to speed up your application” β this is a scam. RDP applications and allocations are always FREE.
- β“We can get you an RDP house faster” β no private individual or company has the power to fast-track your application.
- βFake websites asking for your ID and banking details β only use www.hssonline.gov.za or www.dhs.gov.za.
