Black Friday 2026 South Africa: Date, Cyber Monday and Your Consumer Rights

Black Friday 2026 South Africa: Black Friday on 27 November, Cyber Monday on 30 November, six months to return defective goods, seven-day cooling-off for most online purchases
Quick answer: Black Friday 2026 in South Africa is on Friday, 27 November 2026, and Cyber Monday is on Monday, 30 November 2026. Black Friday is not a public holiday. Many retailers start deals earlier in the week and run them over the weekend.

Black Friday always falls on the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, which is the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 that Thursday is 26 November, so Black Friday is 27 November.

Is Black Friday a Public Holiday in South Africa?

No. Black Friday is a shopping event, not a public holiday. Schools, government offices and most workplaces are open as normal. After Black Friday, the next public holidays in 2026 are the Day of Reconciliation on 16 December and Christmas Day on 25 December.

Your Consumer Rights on Black Friday

South Africa’s Consumer Protection Act (CPA) applies to sale items just like any other purchase. The most useful rights to know:

Your rightWhat it means on Black Friday
The displayed priceA shop cannot charge you more than the lowest price displayed for an item (CPA section 23).
No “bait” advertisingA shop may not advertise a deal it does not reasonably expect to have in stock, unless the advert states the quantity limit (CPA section 30).
Defective goodsIf an item is faulty, you can return it within six months for a repair, replacement or refund (CPA sections 55 and 56).
Online cooling-offFor most online purchases you can cancel within seven days of delivery without giving a reason (Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, section 44). Some items, such as perishable goods, are excluded.

A shop’s “no refunds on sale items” sign does not remove your right to return a defective product. It may, however, apply to items you simply changed your mind about, because in most cases a change-of-mind return in a store is a shop policy, not a legal right.

Where to complain

  1. Speak to the store manager first and keep your receipt.
  2. If the problem is not solved, complain to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO).
  3. You can also report a supplier to the National Consumer Commission (NCC).

How to Avoid Black Friday Scams

Online fraud increases around Black Friday. Protect yourself:

  • Check the website address. Scammers copy well-known retailers’ websites. The address must match the real shop exactly.
  • Be careful with links in SMS, WhatsApp and social media ads. Type the shop’s address yourself instead.
  • Never share a one-time PIN (OTP). No real retailer or bank will ask for it.
  • Prefer card payments with 3D Secure over EFT to unknown sellers. EFTs are very hard to reverse.
  • If a deal looks too good to be true, such as a new smartphone at a fraction of the normal price, it probably is.

Don’t Let Black Friday Lead to Debt

The National Credit Regulator has warned consumers not to use credit to fund Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping. Before you buy:

  • Make a list of things you actually need, such as school items for January.
  • Compare prices for a few weeks before 27 November, so you know whether a “deal” is really cheaper.
  • Avoid store cards and short-term loans for non-essential items. Interest can cost more than the discount.

Black Friday and SASSA Payments

If your household depends on a SASSA grant, note that Black Friday falls after the November payments and before the December ones:
