South Africa School Holidays 2027: Term Breaks and Public Holidays for Learners
South African public schools have four holiday breaks in 2027: a two-and-a-half week break in late March/April (which fully covers Easter), a three-and-a-half week winter break in late June/July, a roughly two-week spring break in late September/October, and the long December/January summer break. Only three public holidays fall during actual term time in 2027 Freedom Day, Youth Day and National Women’s Day the rest land inside a break automatically.
“School holidays” and “public holidays” aren’t the same thing, and mixing them up is a common source of confusion for parents planning around the school year. Public holidays are set nationally for everyone under the Public Holidays Act. School holidays are the term breaks set separately by the Department of Basic Education. This page covers both for 2027, and shows exactly where they overlap.
2027 School Holiday Dates (Term Breaks)
| Break | Dates | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1–2 break | 20 March – 5 April | ~2.5 weeks |
| Term 2–3 break (winter) | 26 June – 19 July | ~3.5 weeks |
| Term 3–4 break (spring) | 23 September – 4 October | ~2 weeks |
| Summer/festive break | From Term 4 close (8 or 10 December) through 12 January 2028 | ~5 weeks |
The Term 1–2 break fully covers Easter Good Friday (26 March) and Family Day (29 March) both fall inside it, so learners get an extended Easter break rather than a single long weekend.
Which Public Holidays Actually Fall During Term Time?
Of South Africa’s 14 public holiday dates in 2027, only three interrupt actual school days:
- Freedom Day Tuesday 27 April, falls in Term 2
- Youth Day Wednesday 16 June, falls in Term 2
- National Women’s Day Monday 9 August, falls in Term 3
Every other public holiday in 2027 New Year’s Day, Human Rights Day and its observed Monday, Good Friday, Family Day, Heritage Day, the Day of Reconciliation, Christmas Day, and the Day of Goodwill and its observed Monday falls inside a school break automatically, so it doesn’t cost any extra teaching days.
One additional date worth knowing: Monday 26 April is a Special School Holiday set by the Department of Basic Education specifically to bridge the weekend into Freedom Day the next day, giving learners a longer break around that holiday. This applies to schools only and isn’t a general public holiday for workplaces.
Every 2027 Public Holiday, Explained
Dates below are confirmed against the Department of Basic Education’s official 2027 Government Gazette calendar. Each one is explained in plain language, whether it falls during term time or a school break.
New Year’s Day Friday 1 January (summer break)
Marks the start of the calendar year, observed the same way as in most of the world. Falls during the December/January school break.
Human Rights Day Sunday 21 March, observed Monday 22 March (Term 1)
Commemorates the Sharpeville massacre of 21 March 1960, when police killed 69 people at a protest against apartheid pass laws. Falls in the last week of Term 1, and because 21 March is a Sunday in 2027, schools observe the holiday on Monday 22 March instead.
Good Friday Friday 26 March (school break)
A Christian observance marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with a date that shifts yearly based on the lunar calendar. Falls inside the Term 1–2 break, so it doesn’t cost any teaching days in 2027.
Family Day — Monday 29 March (school break)
South Africa’s name for Easter Monday, also inside the Term 1–2 break. Chosen as a civic name to sit alongside the day’s Christian origin.
Freedom Day — Tuesday 27 April (Term 2 — a school day)
Marks South Africa’s first democratic election on 27 April 1994, which ended apartheid rule. This is one of only three holidays that actually falls on a school day in 2027 — schools also get the preceding Monday (26 April) off as a Special School Holiday to extend the break.
Workers’ Day — Saturday 1 May (weekend)
South Africa’s version of International Workers’ Day. Falls on a Saturday in 2027, so it has no effect on the school calendar either way.
Youth Day — Wednesday 16 June (Term 2 — a school day)
Commemorates the Soweto Uprising of 16 June 1976, when police violence against protesting schoolchildren killed and injured many students. This is the second of the three holidays that fall on an actual school day in 2027, landing right near the end of Term 2’s long 12-week stretch.
National Women’s Day — Monday 9 August (Term 3 — a school day)
Marks the 1956 march of roughly 20,000 women to the Union Buildings against the extension of pass laws to women. The third and final holiday that falls on a school day in 2027.
Heritage Day — Friday 24 September (school break)
A general celebration of South Africa’s cultural diversity, with no single historical event attached. Falls right at the start of the Term 3–4 spring break.
Day of Reconciliation — Thursday 16 December (summer break)
Before 1994 this date was the Day of the Vow, commemorating the Battle of Blood River. It was renamed after apartheid ended to promote national unity instead. Falls well inside the summer school break.
Christmas Day — Saturday 25 December (summer break)
A Christian observance of the birth of Jesus Christ, widely celebrated as a public and family holiday regardless of religious affiliation.
Day of Goodwill — Sunday 26 December, observed Monday 27 December (summer break)
South Africa’s equivalent of Boxing Day. Falls on a Sunday in 2027, so the Monday after is also a public holiday — though since school is already out for the summer, it has no effect on term dates either way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are school holidays and public holidays the same thing?
No. Public holidays are set nationally under the Public Holidays Act and apply to everyone. School holidays are the four term breaks set separately by the Department of Basic Education, and most public holidays happen to fall inside them.
Does Easter fall during a school break in 2027?
Yes. Good Friday (26 March) and Family Day (29 March) both fall inside the Term 1–2 school break, so Easter doesn’t interrupt teaching time in 2027.
How many public holidays actually affect school days in 2027?
Only three: Freedom Day, Youth Day and National Women’s Day. Every other 2027 public holiday falls during a term break.
