When Can You Apply?
The application window opens shortly after the results are released. In January 2026 the window ran for about two weeks. The 2027 window will be announced by the Department of Basic Education with the 2026 results, which are expected in mid-January 2027. See matric results.
How to Apply for a Re-Mark
The process depends on your province:
- Get your official statement of results from your school.
- Decide which subjects to have re-marked or re-checked.
- Apply at your school, at your district office or online, depending on your province. In the Western Cape in 2026, applications were only accepted online at eservices.gov.za.
- Pay the fee for each subject.
- Wait for the outcome. Your marks can go up, stay the same or go down.
Should You Apply?
A re-mark can help if:
- you are a few marks short of a pass or of a university admission requirement,
- your mark is much lower than your marks during the year, or
- you need a better mark for a bursary or NSFAS.
Remember that a re-mark can also lower your mark.
If You Still Do Not Pass
If you do not get the marks you need, you can rewrite subjects. See the matric rewrite programme and adult matric registration.
