Day of Reconciliation 2026 in South Africa: Date, Public Holiday Pay and History

Calendar page for December 2026 with Wednesday 16 December, the Day of Reconciliation, marked in green
Quick answer: Day of Reconciliation 2026 falls on Wednesday, 16 December 2026, and it is one of South Africa’s 12 public holidays. Because it is in the middle of the week, it does not make a long weekend on its own, but two days of leave (14 and 15 December, or 17 and 18 December) give you a five-day break. Public schools will already be closed, as the school year ends on 9 December 2026.

Why 16 December Matters: The History

The Day of Reconciliation was celebrated as a public holiday for the first time on 16 December 1995. The new democratic government kept 16 December as a holiday but gave it a new purpose: to build reconciliation and national unity after apartheid. The same day, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission held its first meeting.

The date was chosen because it was important to two very different groups:

YearWhat happened on 16 December
1838The Battle of Blood River (Ncome) between Voortrekkers and the Zulu army of King Dingane. Before the battle, the Voortrekkers made a vow to build a church and keep the day as a day of thanksgiving if they won
1961Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the armed wing of the ANC, was formed after the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960 made many leaders believe peaceful protest alone would not end apartheid. It marked its launch with attacks on government buildings in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Durban
1995First Day of Reconciliation as a public holiday, and the first meeting of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Before 1994, Afrikaners marked the day under names such as Dingane’s Day, the Day of the Covenant and the Day of the Vow, while the liberation movement remembered the founding of MK. Turning one date with two opposing meanings into a shared day for all South Africans was a deliberate choice. In Afrikaans the day is called Versoeningsdag.

On the Day of Reconciliation in 2013, a statue of Nelson Mandela was unveiled at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
