How to Apply for SASSA Old Age Pension
SASSA support for qualifying people aged 60 and older
The grant commonly called the SASSA Old Age Pension is officially the Older Persons Grant. It provides monthly financial support to qualifying older people who meet SASSA’s residence, income, asset and other eligibility requirements.
You can apply for the SASSA Older Persons Grant if you are 60 years or older, live in South Africa, meet the applicable citizenship or residence rules, pass SASSA’s means test, do not receive another social grant for yourself and are not maintained in a state institution. The current maximum amount is R2,400 per month, with the higher 75+ rate currently R2,420.
Although many people still call it the SASSA Old Age Pension, the official name is the Older Persons Grant.
For an overview of all grants, see Type of SASSA Grants .
Who Qualifies for the SASSA Old Age Pension?
SASSA currently lists the following main requirements for the Older Persons Grant.
You still need to apply and satisfy SASSA’s means test and other eligibility conditions.
Can both husband and wife receive the Older Persons Grant?
Yes, being married does not automatically prevent each spouse from qualifying for an Older Persons Grant in their own right.
However, SASSA applies the means test to the applicant and spouse’s financial circumstances where the applicant is married.
How Much Is the SASSA Old Age Pension?
This is the current maximum monthly amount for qualifying Older Persons Grant beneficiaries in the standard age band.
The current grant structure provides an additional R20 for qualifying beneficiaries in the 75 years and older age band.
This page uses an evergreen URL, so the grant amount should be updated here whenever a new official increase takes effect rather than creating a new Old Age Pension article every year.
SASSA Old Age Pension Means Test
The Older Persons Grant is means tested. This means SASSA examines whether your financial circumstances fall within the limits for social assistance.
SASSA can assess information such as:
- Your income.
- Your spouse’s income if you are married.
- Private pension income.
- Income from employment.
- Interest and dividends.
- Rental income.
- Investments.
- Property and other assets.
- Bank account information.
Means-test thresholds are adjusted from time to time. Some older government information pages can continue showing previous threshold figures even after grant amounts or financial limits have changed. Use the current SASSA assessment rather than relying on an old table found online.
Does having a private pension automatically disqualify you?
Not automatically. SASSA asks for proof of private pension income because it forms part of the financial assessment.
Whether you qualify depends on your overall financial position and the current means-test rules.
Can you have a bank account and still qualify?
Yes. Having a bank account does not by itself disqualify someone from the Older Persons Grant.
SASSA uses bank statements and other financial information as part of the means test.
Documents Needed for the SASSA Old Age Pension
Prepare the documents that apply to your circumstances before submitting the application.
What if your spouse has died?
If your spouse died recently, SASSA can ask for additional estate information, including the death-related records that apply to your circumstances.
What if you do not have an ID?
Not having the normal ID document does not necessarily mean that SASSA will refuse to start the process immediately.
The government application procedure provides an alternative identity process that can include:
- A SASSA-format affidavit completed before an authorised Commissioner of Oaths.
- A sworn statement from a reputable person who can confirm your name and age.
- Fingerprints taken through the SASSA process.
- Referral to the Department of Home Affairs to obtain the required identity document.
If SASSA instructs you to obtain an ID from Home Affairs, follow that instruction. Failure to obtain the required identity document can later affect the grant.
For ID information, see South African Smart ID Card .

What If You Are Too Old or Sick to Visit SASSA?
SASSA has procedures for applicants who cannot reasonably travel to a SASSA office because of age, illness or frailty.
The government application procedure says the person assisting should take a letter from the applicant and, where applicable, a doctor’s note explaining why the applicant cannot visit the office.
SASSA has also been expanding home-visit support for older and frail clients. If travelling is difficult, contact SASSA before arranging transport or paying another person to handle the grant.
Someone helping you should use the official SASSA process. Never hand over your banking PIN, card PIN or OTP to someone who claims they can secure faster approval.
How Long Does a SASSA Old Age Application Take?
The official government service guidance says an Older Persons Grant application can take up to three months to process.
Processing can involve:
- Identity verification.
- Checking income and assets.
- Checking marital information.
- Reviewing supporting documents.
- Confirming the applicant does not already receive another grant for themselves.
This is why keeping your application receipt or reference is important.
Use How to Check Your SASSA Grant Status to understand application stages and follow-up options.
How Is the Older Persons Grant Paid?
The payment arrangement depends on the beneficiary’s approved SASSA payment method.
The grant can be deposited electronically into an approved bank account.
Beneficiaries using the applicable Postbank arrangement can access the grant through that payment system.
Payment can also be administered through an institution in qualifying circumstances.
When is the Older Persons Grant paid?
Older Persons Grants are normally the first category paid in SASSA’s staggered monthly regular grant calendar.
The exact date changes from month to month.
Check SASSA Payment Dates for the current confirmed calendar.
Once money has been deposited into the applicable account, it remains available for later access.
How to Check Your Old Age Grant Application Status
If the application is connected to SASSA Services, log in and check the active application listed on your account.
Possible application stages can include:
- Application Submitted.
- Application Assessed.
- Application Documents Outstanding.
- Application Pending.
- Incomplete Application Saved.
See How to Check Your SASSA Grant Status for what these statuses mean.
What If Your SASSA Old Age Grant Is Rejected?
If SASSA does not approve the application, it should inform you of the reason for the decision.
Possible problems can involve:
- Not meeting the age requirement.
- Income or assets exceeding the applicable means test.
- Receiving another grant for yourself.
- Identity or residence problems.
- Missing supporting documents.
- Information that could not be verified.
The current government process provides for an appeal to the national Department of Social Development within 90 days after you are notified that the application was unsuccessful.
If the problem is simply a missing document that SASSA still allows you to provide, correcting the application may be different from challenging a final decision.
Can SASSA Review Your Old Age Grant Later?
Yes. Receiving the grant does not prevent SASSA from checking whether you continue to qualify.
A review can examine changes to:
- Your income.
- Your assets.
- Your marital circumstances.
- Your banking information.
- Your residence.
- Other eligibility information.
Failure to cooperate with a legitimate review can affect future payments and can lead to suspension or lapsing of the grant where the required eligibility cannot be confirmed.
What is life certification?
SASSA can require confirmation that a beneficiary is still alive and entitled to the grant. The Agency has also introduced digital life-certification options as part of its expanding self-service system.
Follow the specific instructions sent to you if SASSA requests life certification.
When Can an Older Persons Grant Stop?
The grant can be suspended or lapse when circumstances change.
| Situation | Possible effect |
|---|---|
| Financial circumstances change | SASSA can review whether you still meet the means test. |
| You do not cooperate with a review | Payments can be affected and the grant can be suspended. |
| Fraud or false information | The grant can be suspended or cancelled and further action may follow. |
| You leave South Africa | Absence from the country can affect continued eligibility and can cause the grant to lapse under the applicable rules. |
| You are admitted to a state institution | Normal grant eligibility can be affected. |
| You do not claim for three consecutive months | The official service guidance lists this as a circumstance in which the grant can lapse. |
| Beneficiary dies | The grant lapses. |
What happens in a state-subsidised care institution?
Where a beneficiary is admitted to an institution that has a contract with the state to provide care, special reduced-payment rules can apply.
The government service guidance states that the grant can be reduced to 25% of the maximum amount from the fourth month following admission and restored after discharge under the applicable rules.
Can an Older Person Also Get Grant-in-Aid?
Possibly. Grant-in-Aid is intended for qualifying recipients of an Older Persons, Disability or War Veterans Grant who need regular full-time care from another person because they cannot adequately care for themselves.
The current Grant-in-Aid amount is R580 per month.
It does not replace the Older Persons Grant. It is linked to the main grant and cannot normally continue independently if the main grant ends.
Read How to Apply for SASSA Grant-in-Aid if regular full-time care is required.
Common Old Age Pension Application Mistakes
| Mistake | What to do instead |

| Leaving out private pension income | Declare income and financial information accurately. |
| Not bringing bank statements | Prepare the required bank records or bank confirmation where applicable. |

| Ignoring a review message | Respond to legitimate SASSA review or verification requests. |
