SASSA Payment Dates for January 2027: First Grants of the New Year
These dates are part of the 2026/27 payment schedule approved by National Treasury. January starts a little later than most months because 1 January is a public holiday and SASSA avoids paying on the first working days straight after a holiday weekend.

Grant-in-Aid is paid on the same day as the main grant it is linked to. Children’s grants include the Child Support Grant and the Foster Child Grant.
Why Are January Grants Paid on the 5th and Not the 2nd?
SASSA tries to pay grants as early in the month as possible, usually over three working days. Where possible, its schedule avoids:
- weekends and public holidays,
- the first day of the month,
- Mondays, and
- the day straight after a public holiday.
In 2027, New Year’s Day (1 January) is a Friday, and 2 and 3 January fall on a weekend. Monday 4 January is the first working day after the holiday weekend, so the first payment day is Tuesday, 5 January.
Older Persons Grant: Tuesday, 5 January 2027
The Older Persons Grant is paid on Tuesday, 5 January 2027. This payment comes 34 days after the December payment on 2 December 2026.
Disability Grant: Wednesday, 6 January 2027
Disability Grants are paid on Wednesday, 6 January 2027.
Children’s Grants: Thursday, 7 January 2027
The Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant and other children’s grants are paid on Thursday, 7 January 2027. For many families this is the payment that has to cover the start of the school year.
Back-to-School Planning With the January Grant
Public schools reopen in the middle of January. Check the exact dates for your province in our South Africa school calendar 2027.
- Check fee exemption. Parents who receive a Child Support Grant for a child in a fee-paying public school can usually apply to the school for a fee exemption. Ask the school for the application form.
- No-fee schools cannot charge school fees. If your child attends a no-fee school, you should not be asked to pay compulsory school fees.
- Uniform rules. Schools may set a uniform, but should not force parents to buy it from one specific supplier.
- Buy in stages. Start with what the child needs on the first day and buy the rest after the February payment if necessary.

How Much Will Each Grant Pay in January 2027?
January 2027 is still part of the 2026/27 financial year, so the amounts stay the same as in December. Any increase announced in the February 2027 Budget would usually only start from April 2027.

SRD R370 Payment in January 2027
The SRD R370 grant does not follow the 5, 6 and 7 January dates. Each approved month is paid separately, and payment days can differ from person to person.

What If Your January Payment Is Late?
- Check that the date for your grant type has passed.
- Look at your bank statement, not only the balance.
- Check for an SMS from SASSA about a review or life certificate.
- Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 (toll-free) if the money is still missing, or visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID.

Will SASSA grants increase in January 2027?
No. Grant amounts are normally adjusted from April, after the national Budget in February. January 2027 pays the same amounts as the rest of the 2026/27 year.
Is there a SASSA payment on 2 January 2027?
No. 2 January 2027 is a Saturday. The first payment of the year is on Tuesday, 5 January.
