How to use eHomeAffairs
The Department of Home Affairs is proud to present eHomeAffairs to enable you as a South African citizen by birth to apply to utilize the online services.
eHomeAffairs allows the following:
- Submit ID and Passport applications online,
- Make online payments for applications,
- Make bookings where allowed.
Note: (A branch visit is mandatory to capture and or verify your biometric details, i.e. photo, fingerprints and signature). You can also finalise your application at any Home Affairs office; no appointment is required.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using eHomeAffairs
Before You Start: What You will Need
- A valid South African ID Number
- A cellphone that can receive SMS (for OTP verification)
- A reliable email address
- An internet connection
- Your supporting documents (scanned or clear photos)
- Access to your online banking profile (for payment authorisation)
The process typically involves 10 steps, culminating in an in person visit for biometrics:
1- Account Registration
- Go to the eHomeAffairs website and create a profile.
- You will need to complete your personal details create a secure password, and answer security questions.

2- Verify Cellphone Number:
- Capture the verification OTP (OneTimePin) received via SMS to confirm your cellphone number
- You must capture this PIN to confirm your number and log in.
3- Log In:
- Use your newly created profile credentials to log in.
4- Complete the Application Form:
Select the application type (Smart ID Card and/or Passport) and accurately fill in the required details.
- The application form is for a Smart ID Card and/or Passport.
- You can capture and “submit an application form” for yourself or for a minor directly related to you, typically for a minor requiring a passport for travelling purposes.
- All fields highlighted in red are mandatory and must be “completed”.
5- Submit the Application
After Review all the information there a submit button at the end , click on it to submit your online form.
6- Upload Supporting Documents (If Applicable):
The system will list the required supporting documents for your specific application. You will need to upload digital copies.
- Required supporting documents will be listed.
- Please note that originals will be required to be presented at the branch or bank office.
(Note: You must bring the original supporting document with you to the branch or/ bank for verification.)
7- Make the Online Payment:
- Capture your banking details on the portal..
- Please note that submitting a payment on eHomeAffairs is only an instruction to your bank.
- In order to complete the payments process you need to log on to your internet banking to authorise the payment.
- A payment authorisation process guide can be requested from your bank.
- Once the payment has been authorised, please note that the bank payment verification process must take place, which may take a few minutes.
Part 2: In Person Appointment
8-Book an Appointment (For Bank Branches):
- If you wish to complete your biometrics (photo, fingerprints, signature) at a Home Affairs-enabled Bank Office (e.g., specific branches of FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank, etc.)
- Affairs enabled Bank office, for which a booking is a prerequisite.
- You do not need to make a booking to provide your biometrics at any of the Home Affairs offices.
9-Print Your Confirmation Letter:
Download and print the barcoded confirmation letter and save it to your device.
10-Visit the Branch/Bank:
- Go to the Home Affairs office or the booked bank branch on the scheduled date or/time. You must bring:
- Your printed Confirmation Letter.
- Your original bar coded ID book (if you have one).
- All original supporting documents you uploaded online.
- At the office, your biometrics (photo and fingerprints) will be captured digitally.
- You will be notified via SMS when your new Smart ID Card or Passport is ready for collection at the same branch or bank where you completed your biometrics.

Note on Photos: For the Smart ID Card and Passport applications submitted via the eHomeAffairs system photos are not required as your picture will be captured digitally at the Home Affairs office or enabled bank branch (the “live capture” system).

What is Acceptable Proof of Residential Address?
According to FICA requirements, your acceptable documents must show your name and physical residential address and generally not be older than 3 months (unless it’s an annual document like a rates invoice or long term lease):
- Utility bill (e.g., municipal water and lights account).
- Bank statement.
- Recent active lease or rental agreement.
- Official letter from your employer or school (if residing on premises).
